Another easy question -- Do you typically have to trim Fender pickup covers to fit SD pickups? The wires (for connecting the pickups) are routed on the SD pickup base in such a way that they interfere a bit with the pickup cover. The cover doesn't seem to go as far down as they should, by maybe an 1/8 inch or so, 'cause they contact the pickup connection wires.

Also, is there a left side and right side on the SD pickup or does it matter how they're oriented in the pickguard?

Don't know about the pickup covers.

Unless the guitar has a humbucker or swimming pool route, the pickups only fit one way (I'm assuming a right-handed Strat). In any case, the pickup wire connection always points toward the bridge.

Duncan's changed some of his designs so that the ends of the coil wire attach to the leads at the ends of the pickup instead of attaching at the middle rear (like traditional Strat pickups). This pic doesn't show it all that well but I got tired of searching for a better pic:

Some Duncans still have the traditional form-factor and will only fit one way in a traditional cavity. The newer shape can go in either way -- it doesn't matter which way if the poles are flat or have symetrical stagger. If the poles have "vintage stagger" or other asymetrical stagger the string balance will be different depending on which way you install them (some people prefer reverse stagger for the Hendrix vibe).

I haven't owned any of the new form-factor Duncans so I don't know how the covers fit or what to do if they don't fit well.

Thanks for the response! That's exactly the issue I was talking about. The wires exiting each side of the pickup instead of in the middle. The Fender pickup covers fit over the pickup until they get down far enough that they hit the wires on each end... I'm considering just trimming the covers where they encounter the wires so they slide all the way down... not sure if this is right, though..

Even if the cover's tabs sit directly on the wires and there is a bit of the coil exposed, this is perfectly safe. The real concern here is that the polepieces protrude through their holes in the pickup cover and are at least, level with the top of the cover. If this be the case, no 'modification' to the cover needs to be done. Such is the case with my SSL-3.
