Hi Martian,I am in the process of completing the same project,I have a vast array of capacitors from old radios, some that are used in guitars,if I was trying to duplicate a vintage sound would there be any type of capacitors that would give the sound an edge or is this overblown as just a theory...I am a schematic guy, better with visual than free thinking...LOL

Hello and welcome!

In terms of capacitors, actually, you answered your own question. You stated you have capacitors from old radios, some that are used in guitars. Well, you already have the identical stuff. As to EXACTLY which, here's an interesting article for your perusal:

http://www.premierguitar.com/Magazine/I ... rt_II.aspx

I shall presume you've read this article.

At the risk of going off on a tangent, if one is from the old, "Plug In and Play School" like me, that means your guitar goes directly into a nice old tube amp with none of those new fangled transistorized rectifier circuits or any other effects built in for that matter; no effects pedals, no racks, nothing; just you, your guitar and your amp. Such a condition obviously lends for the purest sound coming out of your guitar, through a premium cable, into the amp with the sound coming straight out where the warmth of the amp all combine to where they are indeed (and here is the key), all functioning at the highest level as a complete unit. So yes, in terms of true, transparent fidelity, a cheap cap just won't do! Conversely, any cap would easily do if the guitar's signal is being run through some sort of preamp(s) and/or inferior cable(s) and/or solid state effects heavy amp which in turn, taints the guitar's original signal for better or for worse, usually the latter of the two.

Believe it or not, I only own one guitar. Of course it is a Stratocaster, more popularly known as, "The Fratocaster" which I might add, will be with me until the day I take, "The Big Dirt Nap". In it, I use two 'high-end' type caps. Literally, a 1956 (or it might be earlier) "Bumble Bee" for the neck and middle pickups and a Jensen Oil in Paper for the bridge pickup. To my ear, this configuration draws out the absolute best the guitar through the amp has to offer. As you can see, per the above article coupled by my close to 50 years playing and technical experience, superior caps positively give the sound an edge where it certainly isn't some overblown theory.

Typically, any voltage is fine yet the caps of the day were in the 400 to 600 volt range. As to the microfarads, what pickups and which value pots do you plan on using?

Of course, you're welcome.

Hello Martian & Friends!

I`m about to pimp my Squier Affinity Strat made in China 2010.
I ordered a Set of 57/62 Pickups and plan on changing electrical too if nessecary.
So here is where your opinion comes in.
Should I, better: do you think it makes sense to change pots or/and caps and wiring plus the output jack in this guitar?
I am a lefthanded player, so finding lefthand pots may be difficult ... but if it gives me more of the john frusciante RHCP sound i am looking for i will find and order them.
I am running the guitar through my fender vibro champ xd amp, a hybrid digital/tube combo that i really like.

Welcome!

Concerning the pots, caps and wiring, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! As to the output jack, it is definitely going to give out on you eventually and so, since you are taking the guitar apart for the pickups, you might as well change the jack then.
