Hi,
I have a fender Blacktop see here http://www.fender.com/products/blacktop ... dNo=014810

Thinking about replacing the neck pickup. It sounds ok when its split but when its selected full (neck only) or mid switch position (full bridge full neck humbuckers) the sound seems dull or muddy. Is this just the nature of the neck position with a humbucker or is it the stock pickup? I would need a splitable humbucker perhaps a gibson?

Welcome.

Your existing humbuckers are splittable. This, coupled by the fact that Gibson HBs are bassier than what you have in there now, is clearly not the answer.

Before someone comes along and says, "Learn to use your volume and tone controls", a significant part of your problem is not in your volume or tone control settings. Rather, you do not have complete control over when either of your pickups split for this is predetermined by their wiring to the pickup selector switch. Clearly, this works for some but and in your case, not for all.

You'd do better with your existing pickups to install a push/pull pot or mini-switch so you can thin out (split) that neck humbucker regardless of pickup selector switch setting. You could also do the same for your bridge pickup and then use a 3 way pickup selector switch. You'd increase the tonal options of your guitar and of course, you'd be able to have more control over your pickups' balance/output.

Not to cloud the issue but you could also use an on/on/on mini-switch for each pickup where it will allow the pickup it is teamed with for series, single or parallel wiring options, thus allowing even more tonal variations at your command where again, you'd be able to have even more control over your pickups' balance/output.

And then, you can fiddle with your volume and tone controls if and as necessary. :D
