Hello All,

Just purchased and installed a new set of 57/62 (two-wire) pickups in my '09 American Deluxe Stratocaster w/ S1 switch (Ltd Ed Vintage White), replacing the stock SCN (three-wire) pickups.

I wired all grounds (Black) and leads (White) exactly where they were before, minus the "Green" (third wire) grounds from the SCN, which I simply removed.

Unfortunately, neither the neck pickup or the S1 switch are working properly (very low volume, etc). Middle and bridge seem to work fine. I have been troubleshooting for days (checking connections, resoldering, etc) and I'm pretty much stuck.

Can't reach Fender since they're closed til Tuesday for New Years, so now I turn to the Fender Forum. :)

Hoping someone can help! So... A few questions:

1.) Where do I go from here?
2.) Could the neck pickup itself be bad? (Have multimeter, not sure how to test)
3.) Do all three grounds (Black) need to be shared/common (as before)?? If so, where to??

The only real difference in the wiring that I notice now is that ALL the "Green" (third-wire) grounds were previously combined to the back of tone pot 1 (along with the neck "Black" wire as well)--so 4 wires to back of tone pot 1.

Instead now I have just the "Black" neck ground on tone pot 1, with the other two (bridge and middle) "Black" grounds going to the round S1 circuit board under the volume pot (exactly where they were removed from).

Please help!! I'm sure I'll get it eventually, just a bit frustrated. Aggghhh. I just wanna play!!!

Any/all input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Sorry, but I don't know of any way you can replace a 3-wire pickup with a 2-wire pickup in an S-1 system and make it work. The three wires of an SCN (or any other 3-wire pickup) are signal +, signal -, and signal ground/shield. The three wires act as a twisted/shielded pair. Without the 3rd wire (black), you are lacking the signal - wire.

Howdy Bill!

The S-1 works a treat with my two wire Hot Noiseless pups.

You only need one Hot and one Ground wire to make the series connections the S-1 switch provides.

Cheers & Happy New Year!

There's a few problems with the S-1 wiring you've described.

Both the Neck & Bridge pickups should have their ground wires on the S-1 Switch and the Middle pickup ground should be on the back of the Volume pot. You'll want to take a peek at the S-1 Wiring diagram again.

http://support.fender.com/service_diagr ... A_SISD.pdf

Alternatively, If you can confirm that the above diagram is the same for your 2009 Dlx (which I believe it should be) give me a few days I'll draw you up an easier, clearer diagram to work from that will include the S-1 with a set of 57/62 pups.

Hope this helps & Happy New Year!

Andy

Hey, Andy.

I looked at that diagram for quite some time last night and couldn't make any sense out of it. I think I will just stick with working on amplifiers. Three or five pickup selections is more than enough for me.

HA! :D

I have the same problem when I look inside an amplifier! I have absolutely no idea how those "Vacuum-state Thermionic Devices" work (I can talk a good game but actually know very little)!

Different strokes for different folks!

Cheers!

Andy

Thank you for the thoughtful responses.... Sorry I didn't reply sooner. Quite an interesting scenario it turned out to be... I decided the S1 wiring was just too complicated to continue messing with and not necessary to have (especially without SCN pickups) so I went out and bought all new pots, cap, switch, wires + pickguard (over $100) and wired the 57/62s into that complete assembly. Of course, IT STILL DIDN'T WORK!!!

After OVER 3 WEEKS of trial and error, troubleshooting, and a whole new pickguard assembly--I finally tested all 3 pickups with the multimeter... and the NECK PICKUP WAS DEAD!! DOA, brand new, out of the box. Of course I should have tested them right away (live and learn) but as big of a Fender fanboy as I am (Am Dlx Strat, Am Dlx Jazz Bass, MIM Tele, NOS Blues Jr, Custom Vibrolux) I have to say shame on the QC @ Fender on this one. Anyone know where these are wound?

This could have been so easy--but instead turned into just another good lesson in life (and in guitar wiring!). No real complaints about it except the fact that I spent so much time, effort, and $$ trying to fix something that had no chance of ever working.

Nonetheless, as of last night I received the replacement set, wired them up, and WOW, was it worth it. Everything I'd hoped for on my own tone quest... and this time it only took me an hour--not a month! They are a bit noisier than the SCN (actually a lot noisier--at least in my studio) but they sound so good I'll take the trade-off. :)

So in the end it's all been sorted out, though I'm just now in the process of putting the SCN back in to the original (stock) S1 pickguard assembly--which shouldn't be too difficult--I hope. Seems like I'm nearly an expert by now--having done it 10x already. Haha. Although it actually is pretty difficult... that S1 volume pot wiring... with multiple wires into the tiny eyelets on the board... Oh well.

Anyhow... Thanks again, and best to everyone... See you around!
