Hi guys,

I have a American Standard stratocaster (2008) bought 3 years ago, although I play it no more than a few times per week in my room and it looks like new, its neck pickup turned off when I was playing it without any reason. It happened the last week, so I took the strings off the guitar and take off the pickguard too to check inside if there was any trouble with the wires, but everything seemed to be well. After that I plugged it again and the pickup begin to run normally. But days after without playing it, I played the guitar again and everything was going well but after a few minutes the pickup turn off again and I thougth F***! What´s going on? Do I have to change or buy another pickup? What´s the problem, the wires, the pickup, my amplifier, I don´t Know?
PLEASE, if somebody have had the same problem with a single coil pickup tell me what should I do with this?

Héctor

It could be something as simple as a poorly-soldered lead-in wire from the suspect pickup to the tone control or the selector switch. OTOH it could be an intermittently-open coil within the pickup itself which would require re-winding or outright replacement. Is the guitar still under warranty? If so, I'd take it to an authorized Fender service center and let the techs there take a look-see.

Welcome!

Frankly, I doubt the pickup or connections are bad since you've had it for a while and have taken proper care of it. Rather, these are the chief causes I've seen:

- Crud build up in the switch's mating contacts causing a short where these contacts have to be cleaned.

- Due to normal use, these mating contacts of the switch have bent away (separated) from each other where they need to be pinched closer together to reestablish a consistent connection.

- The terminal and or lead wire of the affected pickup on the switch is bottoming out, touching the body underneath where the shielding paint is in contact, shorting the pickup out. The terminal or the wire has to be re-angled or, a piece of electrical tape has to be put underneath as an insulator.

If you do decide to bring it in to be looked at, make sure you take it to a COMPETENT tech or guaranteed, they'll have you going for a new pickup and maybe even a new switch too.

I'd check the guitar cable first.

If the cable was faulty, all three pickups would exhibit the same problem.
