Final answer - the new guitar came in and it also doesn't have the shielding. It buzzed the same way as the first one. So apparently the new Tele Deluxe just doesn't have the shielding and the diagrams on the Fender site are out of date. It's not a deal killer. I like the guitar and I'll just deal with it. Since they went to so much trouble I took the new guitar and just said "thanks." Probably would have been better if the store had contacted Fender to verify. I just wanted to know if this was correct or not. Seems like this is the way it is so I'll adapt, adopt and improve. Maybe. I think I'll just play it for a while and see how it works live. If it's not a huge problem on the noise I may just leave off shielding it. It's sort of a pain to go in and work around the controls unless you remove everything and with a brand new guitar I don't know if I want to do that. It was just funny that the salesman wholeheartedly agreed that there was a grounding problem on the first guitar and suggested bringing in a new one. Oh well, now that I know, life will go on. I have a Telecaster and that has made all the difference.

Are you sure there is no shielding? It is painted body color. Is there a screw w/lug and wire driven into the control cavity and attached to the back of the tone pot? Maybe in the bridge pickup cavity? Try taking a DVM set to ohms and touch it to the back of the tone pot and dig it in a little bit into the bottom of the contriol cavity to penetrate the paint.

The guitar is a cherry sunburst and the paint in the control cavity is pretty light, almost clear and the wood color shows through. On my P Bass I could actually see some black paint where they had not completely covered with the white paint and there was a screw there with a ground wire. This one had no wire or screw. No extra wire was running from the control cavity to the bridge or neck cavities. On the first one in fact, it looked like they had drilled a normal cavity and painted, then drilled the extra deep space for the S1 switch so it was bare wood. I even had the repair tech at the store open this one to double-check but no wire or shielding according to him. It's just odd that the wiring diagrams clearly show what you are referring to (on several models in fact) but the guitar just doesn't have it and that's at least 3 such guitars I'm aware of with no shielding. My bass is a 2008 and the drawings on the Deluxe show a 2004 date. I guess the N3's are supposed to not need the shielding but I think they could benefit from it. Certainly better than a regular, unshielded single coil but I don't think I could go all the way in calling them "noiseless" at this point.

Huh. :?

Shielding won't help quiet noiseless or humbucker pickups but it does reduce noise pickup due to the capacitance between your guitar and your body causing your body to act as an antenna.
