I have been playing a set of vintage noiseless for about a week now, and i have to say they are my fav fender pups and my second fav pup of all time. At the rate I'm falling in love with them it won't be long before they unseat my Rose pups as my ATF. As someone who played out five nights a week I know you never know what kind of wiring you will run into at a gig, and these just takes the headache out of it. They sound like single coils. They have the quack. They are nice and balanced across the board, and they handle over drive well.

So why the hate on these?

Strat-talk has massive hate for these pups. Other guitar boards just hammer them.

Well, seeing that you asked, listen to the DiMarzio Virtual Vintage/Area series or any of Kinman's offerings. Also note either's construction vs. that of the VNs.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

+1!

I'll stick with my DiMarzio's.

I fitted VNs to my Mex Strat and I've always been very impressed with them. Maybe not quite as clear and articulate as the pickups on my CS Custom Deluxe, but noticeably less hum (especially when you're right on top of your amp).

In fact I liked them so much I bought a set of VNs for the Tele USA Deluxe I built from bits. Different to the Strat, obviously, but still excellent.

I have tried many sets of noiseless Strat pickups and I can honestly say that the Vintage Noiseless are my least favorite. I've even had two sets of them and they were both pretty much the same. Lace Sensors, Hot Noiseless, various DiMarzio Virtual/Area pups, and all the Kinman sets sound better to my ears. The Vintage Noiseless however do much better in the Clapton mid-boost circuit. But without it they become very hard-edged and jagged, especially in the 1/3/5 positions. If you can live in the 2 & 4 positions they would probably be easier to get along with.

I just posted something similar on this. I have VN's, N3's& Hot Noiseless pickups in my guitars. I think you hit the nail right on the head. They are strat pickups, clear with quack. Thing is this isn't what I'm after. I want more output.

So for Fender Noiseless I vote for the Hots. They're warm, high output and sound great.

Thing is it's all down to personal taste. I don't hate any of the noiseless but I rate the Vintage ones the lowest of the 3 I have. Clapton uses them with a mid boost so I think it would be interesting to see that and how they perform being boosted.

In fact I'm off to buy a set of Hots to replace my vintages right now. Sod the texas specials I was thinking of. Lol.

I've got the VN's in both of my Clapton Strats and love them. My black one originally had Lace Sensors, that I just never really bonded with although I know there are lots of folks that love them. To my ears, the VN's are very clear and definitely "quack" with no harshness.

For those that were wondering, they sound awesome when you crank the mid-boost up. At around 5 on the boost they start sounding like humbuckers and maxed out, they are very capable of overdriving my DRRI with the amps volume set around 2. Very cool.

That being said, I've never heard them in a non-midboost Strat, so I can't say what they sound like in that scenario.

That's a really polarizing pickup. I love my VN's in two Strats. I love my Hot Noiseless, too. I do wish I had the mid boosts with my VN's, but I find them nice and glassy.

Oh well, love them or hate them, nobody seems to be undecided

I've went thru all the Kinmans, VN's, duncans, I always end up with the Lace plus pack.

setting them up, learning how to set your effects and amp with them and you can get some very nice tone from them..

Vintage Noiseless are my absolute favourites. Maybe not the right pickup for someone who wants a big distortion sound but that's not my style at all. For crystal clear clean sounds and a bit of twangy overdrive they are just heaven.

Just ordered a set of VNs and the midboost. I love what I've heard of the VNs, and I can't wait to get them installed.

The best pickup is whatever works for you, whether that be something hand wound from metallised goat hair by Tibetan monks or something off an old smashed strat copy you found in the rubbish.

That's absolutely right. I just read a post from soneone who had stock MIM pups, and he put in a set of boutiques, then right back to the MIMs because they sounded better to him.

+1

I once put a set of Texas Special's into a client's E-series Squire, replacing the original ceramic's. For whatever reason(s) the TS's sounded like crap compared to the original pickups so out they came and back in went the OEM coils. The TS's didn't go to waste though -- I put them into the same fellow's Jay Turser clone and they positively screamed. Go figure!
