I purchased a Clapton signature a year ago (my first american made strat) and I love it but I'm afraid that the Vintage noiseless pickups don't have quite the sound I'm after in the "in between" positions. I play 100% clean and like the sticky warm somewhat twangy sound in the "in betweens" especially. It's a Mark Knopfler, Albert Lee, and Vince Gilly type sound. Another question as well how does the S-1 switching fit in with the sound I'm after? Any advice will be much appreciated! :?

Keep the Clapton as is, and look into a Telecaster. Albert Lee's sound was achieved partially due to a Telecaster.

Frankly, I doubt you're going to be able to get the tone your after with those ceramic magnet pickups. You might want to consider changing them out for some kind of alnico ones (preferably humbucking because of the 25dB pre-amp). If you don't want to change out the pickups, you might want to try a superior EQ pedal to get you in the ballpark. Again, I don't think you'll genuinely achieve the results you're after. Of note is the fact that the desired tones you seek from the players you've mentioned are from them using alnico magnet pickups in their guitars.

Thanks for the input, I'm afraid you're right to get the true tone I'm after I'm gonna need some different pickups. This has an up and a down. First I gotta sell the Clapton. :( Second I gotta shop for a new strat. :D

I tried out a Roadhouse Strat with Texas Specials and after comparing it to the Clapton discovered that I can achieve pretty much the same tone with the Clapton. If I turn the mid-boost almost completely down and turn up the amp a little more the sound is very comparable.

After really turning the knobs and experimenting I have discovered that the Clapton is very flexible in tone; the mid-boost and TBX controls are very effective at dialing in the right tones.

Cranking up the mid boost when you play on the bass and mid strings really gives you some nice punch and turning down the mid-boost and turning up the TBX gives you more of the traditional Strat tone.
I think I will keep the Clapton and keep an eye out for a beat up Tele. :D
