Im building a "blacktop" tele, but I want a 5 way switch so I can coil tap. I dont think the stock fender humbuckers can be split so what would be a "budget" way to go with this??? Also, are Fender and Gibson chrome covered humbuckers the same size??? I was thinking about a set of Dragonfires but it says they are for Gibsons. Any advice would probably be appreciated.....

Welcome.

Any stock humbucker can be split provided it wasn't encased in epoxy. It just depends on the particular model and how adept one is at doing it. In other words, if your OEM HBs have 4 conductor wires, it will be easy. If it only has two, you'll have to add a third wire to the two link wires between the coils which joins the coils together in series. If you don't know what I'm talking about, it is better not going there as you can easily damage/destroy the pickup.

Dimension wise, some Fenders HBs are essentially the same size as Gibsons, some Fender HBs can be larger; and then there's polepiece spacing considerations with and within any brand.

As to Dragonfire pickups, I'll say this as diplomatically as I can. You are basing the tone of your guitar around real 'economy' pickups for the sake of coil tap capabilities. Odds are, your OEM pickups are superior to these.

Please don't think I'm talking down to you or being sarcastic. Believe me, I'm not. It's just that the drift I catch here is that you may be getting in over your head and chances are, you'll wind up disappointed with the results both sonically and financially.
