I have a single humbucker circa 1985 Squier Stratocaster. It currently has a Select pickup in it, which sounds OK but I am looking for a hotter sound. I play a lot of heavy metal style music, so I'm looking for a crunchy sound. I've always wanted a Lace Sensor, as I've heard great things about them. Would a red Lace Sensor humbucker be a good choice for a heavily distorted sound? I use a ridiculous amount of distortion. If the Lace Sensor is a bad choice, what is a good choice for the sound I'm looking for? Also, is it hard to wire a coil tap switch into a Lace Sensor? I don't care about it being mellow, as that's what my Telecaster is for.

Based on your requirements, the Red is a perfect choice. It is a most powerful pickup and extremely prominent in the midrange (which is where the "balls" of any pickup lies).

As to a coil tap switch, if Lace hasn't change their long standing base plate design (I haven't seen one in a few years), it should be relatively simple to get at the internal leads and reconfigure them appropriately to a switch.
