An active pickup's primary advantage over passive is it's noise reduction ability. It also gives a cleaner tone, through any number of techniques like adding a preamp inside of the pickup itself, as is the case with most EMG's. They're predominantly found with technical metal players (they allow for cleaner palm muting) but they can be pretty versatile. Notably Kirk Hammett and Claudio Sanchez (Coheed and Cambria) use active pickups. For a better crunch though I'd stick with passive.

It really depends more on the pickup design itself. Either can be made clean or dirty.

I have the emg DG-20 setup in a strat. the tone goes from normal strat to humbucker sound. the volume is louder then my other strats. the clean tone is great. also active pickups need a battery I installed mine in the trem cavity by moving my trem springs to install battery. you cant leave the cord plugged in because it will drain the batteries. I also have a deluxe strat with S-1 system and it is great sounding also . I have regular noisless also . I found that you have to expermint to get the sound you want you can always change them back. Remeber your amp also makes a difference and the kind of music you play also may change your needs. Vince Gill , David Gilmour, and alot of metal players use acitve so they are very versital.

I have the EMG J-set in my AM STD J and it made all the difference in the world. They are a ton more sensitive, and they pick up every little nuance of my playing. Try a pair.

I think that passive pick-ups are generally more deep and better sounding than active pick-ups . but thats just my opinion.

Passives have gone a long way, they sound so much better now. For tonal variance tho, active gives you more option(s).
