Hey guys, I need some help finding some Big Dipper Pickups, like the ones in the John Mayer Strat. I'm building my own strat and I really want those pickups because of their boosted mids. The problem, is that I can't even find them on Guitar Center or Musician's Friend. The only one I've found is on Ebay, and I can't spend $600 on a loaded pickguard.

If Fender doesn't sell these separately, what is a good set of PU's that get that boosted mid/SRV type sound, excluding Texas Specials.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it!

Big Dippers aren't sold separately.

FWIW, they are called, "Big Dippers" because the midrange of these pickups is scooped or "dipped". Consequently, you have a glaring contradiction here. Please clarify if you want midrange light, medium or heavy pickups.

Hm. I was told they would boost the mids. Well. I was looking for some pickups that would be great for blues. I want to get that classic "ceramic" tone from the middle/neck and middle/bridge positions. I don't like a lot of treble and bite. Maybe that will help

Are you using the word, "ceramic" as literally a magnet type identifier? If you are, typical ceramic magnet characteristics are that of a lot of treble and bite.

Please correct me if I am wrong: I am interpreting your requirements as looking for something in a more smooth, mellow, sweet sounding vein with a bit of 'teeth' as required where a set of Texas Specials would be too 'over the top'. Am I correct in this assumption?

Yeah. I hate the bridge pickup on most strats. It's way to bitey. I turn the bridge tone down because it bothers me. I only really use neck, neck/mid, and bridge/mid, but I do like that SRV type of tone where he has it on the bridge/mid setting. It's not to bitey to me like most people who play at that position.

I guess I just have to find a guitar with Texas Specials and try it again.

Oh, and I do apologize if I am being very confusing!

Perhaps the Stratocaster simply isn't the guitar for you......?
