Just new to the forum and I'm really hoping I didn't make a purchase mistake. I just recently bought a new American Deluxe Strat with the N3 noiseless pickups. I wanted a more bluesy sound and searched the internet. They had the Fender vintage noiseless which I purchased thinking that they're different than mine. I received the pu's today and upon reading the back of the package " OEM on American Deluxe and many Custom Shop Stratocaster guitars." Are the N3 noiseless in my American Deluxe the same as these "vintage" ones I just ordered.? Thanks for your help...

The N3's are substantially different from the standard "Vintage Noiseless" pickups, being a recent development of the previous SCN design. Both use "stacked-coil" technology to eliminate the 60Hz hum and reject other spuriously-generated noise but beyond that there's little resemblance.

Honestly, I haven't had an opportunity to check out the new N3's. I do have a pair of home-built Strats, each with the SCN's though. So I know how they sound (and apparently, the N3's are somewhat similar). I've played the Vintage Noiseless pickups many times and when compared to the SCN's, I believe the VN's are more authentic-sounding. Thus, on its face, your decision may please your ears. Of all the available noiseless pickups though, my favorites remain the DiMarzio Virtual Vintage and Area series. They're way "strattier" than either the SCN's or the VN's. I built two Strats around those.

Best of luck. Post some pics and let us know how the swap worked out.

The SCNs use ceramic magnets whereas the VNs use Alnico ones. This alone will create a tonal difference.

+1

That's probably responsible for the lion's share of the sonic differences between them. Probably why the DiMarzios have it all over both of them in terms of "strattitude" as well.
