I put in two new pickups in my ssh strat. A Dimarzio area 58 in the neck and a seymour duncan sh-1 in the bridge and left the middle pickup stock. Everything sounds great except for the second position. It sounds like I'm listening to a guitar threw a telephone (is this "out-of-phase"?). Everything was done by a local pro, so i don't know why they didn't hear it and or let me know about it. Question is can i rewire to fix this problem or should I just get another area 58 for the middle position.

Here's the problem: The Duncan is OUT of phase with the middle pickup which is IN phase with the DiMarzio. To compound the problem, the Duncan doesn't have phasing capabilities aside from taking it's magnet out, flipping it over and of course, reinstalling it. The identical problem would exist even if you just bought another DiMarzio for the middle position. Now, if you don't want to do the magnet flip, the other alternative is to to reverse the hot and ground wires on both the OEM pickup and the DiMarzio to solve your problem. I don't know your "local pro's" mindset nor why he didn't catch this as to most experienced techs, it's common knowledge that the DiMarzio Area HBs are out of phase with Duncan full sized HBs and it's a sometimes (it depend on the years) with OEM Fenders. Even if he didn't know this, the weak, nasal tonality of an out of phase pickup combo should have definitely been heard, instantly identified and hence, fixed. Further, you would have done better if you installed a TB-1 instead of an SH-1 as the TB-1's polepieces are designed to line up with Fender string spacing wheras the SH-1s are designed for Gibson spacing.

Good luck.
