I am not too sure about which strings he uses, but I am sure if you googled "john mayer setup or rig". You would find your answers.

His pickups are custom wound to his sound as he has the mids scooped out. You can get the pickups in his artist model. I have seen sets sell on ebay so you might be able to pick them up from there.

Two Rock amps, Big Dipper pickups (low output), ernie ball strings probably .11 gauge, lots of pedals.

It's been covered before. I'd recommend searching the web a bit, but be careful because there's a lot of misinformation and his gear changes. What I just told you could even be wrong.

Generally go with low output pickups, bigger strings, and crank a tube amp for a similar tone to his. Tubescreamer won't hurt either. It would be pricey to try to replicate his exact gear.

I've recently been asking myself the same question, especially about how he gets the tone on "I Don't Trust Myself With Loving You." It's so weird, and I've found a good way to imitate it without actually getting the exact sound; kind of like impersonating SRV's tube screamer sound. :D

I thought Mayer was a fan (and owner/user) of Dumble amps?

Equipment aside, I wonder how much of that tone comes from the fact that Mr. Mayer picks with his fingers vs. using a plectrum...

For I Don't Trust Myself, it's a kind of "auto-wah" effect using a strat with the tone knobs set very low, and the bass kicked up on the amp.

Mayer used Dumble amps for a while and maybe still does somewhere in his setup, but ever since the Continuum tour he got a limited run of signature amps from Two Rock, and uses his signature model among other Two Rocks:

In certain songs and techniques, a lot of his tone comes from fingerpicking, but he doesn't always do it. He cradles the pick between his fingers and will fingerpick part of a song then slide the pick in between his fingertips to strum or play a solo on the more intense parts, while maybe switching back to fingerpicking for a calmer part of the solo. A good example of this would be the studio recording of the Bold as Love cover from Continuum. He uses a pick through the whole song up until the part where it slows down at around 2:50, and then he finger picks until the song picks up again. You can tell in the tone when he switches, but he still has a great tone with a pick that leaves a lot to be guessed about his equipment.

There was a poster in my Total Guitar magazine saying "John Mayer uses super slinky's (9s) and Power Slinky's (11s).

JM uses 2 Two Rock amps with 2 wooden 2x12 cabinets. He also uses a Dumble Overdrive 100W amp, same as SRV used :)

Before the Two Rock amps I believe he used Fender Vibro Kings.

Big Dipper Pick-Ups and I believe Dunlop pics, not really shure about the picks.

For I Don't Trust Myself With Loving You he uses an envelope filter, no tone knobs set low or something just the envelope filter :)

When he was on the Chapelle Show he was just plugged into a Blues jr, and still sounded like John Mayer. :)

Why do people post to threads that are over a year old? This one is three years old. :?:
