Hello -

I posted this in the Squier forum, but maybe this is the right place.

I have a fender affinity-series telecaster. Its a nice little back-up guitar, but I am not happy with the standard pickups.

I am interested in replacing the standard pickups with Fender Noiseless Telecaster Pickups (Model 099-2116-000). http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002E3D6W

I am looking for some advice for someone who has more experience with the affinity telecasters:

- Can the affinity guitar pickups be replaced with nicer Fender pickups, such as the noiseless pickups?

- If so, does anyone have any lessons learned to help have a better install (e.g., special considerations for shielding, etc)?

Thank You,
Doug

IIRC the noiseless pickups are a bit taller than standard single coils -- it may be necessary to deepen your body's pickup routs in order to correctly install them.

Thanks Arjay -

Sounds like I am getting into luthier territory. This may need some adult supervision.

In your opinion, is deepening the pickup routs to get a good fit not a big deal for someone who does that type of work for a living? ie., if I hear a luthier say 'wheeeew thats gonna be tough' - it might not be the guy for me.

Thanks,
Doug

It's not a really big deal -- I could do it with a Dremel tool and a router bit. A *real* luthier with a table router would do a true professional job that looked for all the world like it was done at the factory. Before leaping into this though, measure the depth of your pickup routs and compare them to the mounting dimensions of the noiseless pickups to ascertain that this kabuki dance is even necessary.

When in doubt, check it out (any time power tools or drilling holes is involved).

Let us all know how the swap goes.

Rawk on!

Read my post here: viewtopic.php?f=15&t=56646

The pickups I used are deeper than the stock pickups and I had no problems.

Did you have to use the Dremel tool to replace them. This can be difficult trying to freehand with rotary tools. In the future you could try the Dremel Trio model. Check it out at http://dremelattachments.org/dremel-trio/. Glad to hear everything worked well for you!
