Hi all,
I have a 98 mim jazz, that I just installed fender original series pup's in & I must say sounds real sweet...except for buzzing until you touch the strings etc.

When I bought this 98 mim bass a couple of weeks ago it sounded muddy, and had lots of buzz until you touched the fretboard or metal parts, so I thought I would get the copper shielding tape (got some today) I was also wondering though should I just replace the controls & jack at the same time just in case the shielding dosen't work?? as I don't want to keep opening it up after every change due to this buzzing...

Can I use 18 awg wire instead od 22 awg as I already have lots of 18 here at home?

thanx in advance!

You can use the 18 gauge with no problem.

The shielding won't do much if anything.

It wouldn't hurt to upgrade the controls & jack.

beatles1909, you have a ground missing somewhere , that'is why it buzz. And like Martian write, yes you can use 18 gauge wire. Bigger is better, until is too big for easy work

thanks for the responses guys!!

I wired in new pots and jack, pup's & pickguard, shielded cavities etc.
I must say this bass is very quiet & clean sounding now.

When I bought it I knew it needed work, so my plan was to use it to learn how to do some of my own repairs & setups. I really like this bass now.
thanks again!! :D
