I just received a new Fender 500k ohm S1 switch/pot from an EBay sell. I measured it on my multimeter and it shows 385k ohm. This seems really off. I wouldn't expect it to be exactly 500 but wow, that's pretty low. Is this typical, a pot being off by that much? I don't think I can use it. I was wanting to replace a Dimarzio 500k push pull volume pot with this switch.

Most pots are +/- 20% tolerance. 500K can be anywhere from 400K to 600K ohms. 385 is close to 400. I wouldn't worry about it.

Hey, I understand that using higher resistance tone controls (say 500k vs 250k) will brighten up a guitars sound. Is this true for volume controls also? I have 3 Dimarzio pickups and am using the recommended 500k pots for volume and tone controls. If anything I would want to brighten up the sound of this guitar a little. If this somewhat lower resistance s1 volume pot will hurt my brightness I don't want to use it. I might hunt for another one with a higher value.

Thanks for your help!

Like I said, most pots are +/- 20% tolerance. You might have a long search ahead of you. Good luck.

If you're using any of DiMarzio's stacked humbuckers ("Area", "Virtual Vintage", "HS2/3", "YJM", etc) those pickups are all intended to be used with 250K pots.
