Right now i have no clue what to get. I currently have an mim strat and want to wake up the beast but i have no clue of what CS pickups to get. I really want pickups with a killer vintage sound but will sound really good with distortion. I love playing red hot chili peppers and a little SRV style stuff but also need distortion. What would some of you recomend.

My personal favorite is the Fat '50s set since they put a skosh more beef into the mid frequencies. For a hotter, edgier roadhouse vibe the Texas Specials are hard to beat. It's hard to peg the RHCP sound -- perhaps the CS '69's, which are smoother and a little more evenly-balanced. All of these sets sound superb with a TS9 or a Fulltone OCD in front of a vintage Fender combo (or a re-issue).

John Frusciante uses different guitars, but most of his recording is done with an early 60's Strat. SRVs guitars were usually late 50's - early 60's models. Contrary to what most people believe, the pickups in his Number One were stock, probably from 1959. So that puts your pickup tone in the middle of the Fender spectrum, around 6 ohms. These pickups work well with all but the most extreme types of distortion, as they will stay clear and not mud-up.

So the question is... what do you mean by distortion? If you want early Led Zep or Iron Maiden, you can get there. If you plan on plugging into an Orange stack and grinding away to Sleep or C.O.C., you're gonna be a sad guy. That calls for a hotter pickup to push the amp with mids and output.

One suggestion I can come up with is to install something like a SD Little '59 or Hot Rails and wire the coils to split. You'll probably need 1-meg pots with a .047 tone cap to cover everything. That way you have humbucker power that can be split to a vintage single coil spec. Plus, they fit right into your pickguard and body.
