I have a tele i recently installed texas specials in and i used the wiring diagram they give you. I am not sure why the neck pickup has 3 wires? and in the middle position it seems the guitar gets louder and in the 1st and 3rd position i get a volume drop? Has anyone else had this problem?

Hi Greg,

The neck pickup has a third wire because of the way 4 way Tele pickup selector switches work. See, with the usual 3 way, the cover of the pickup is grounded by a tiny wire going from the cover to the negative terminal or eyelet hole of the pickup. Naturally, the pickup's negative wire comes from the eyelet and gets grounded to the back of the volume pot. This 'traditional system' will not work properly for the 4 way switch. The wiring polarity of the neck pickup must be reversible with the 4 way and with the cover permanently soldered to the negative wire of the neck pickup, the polarity is forced to be only one way. So, that third wire you speak of grounds the cover independently where the neck pickup wires can be reversible.

As to a volume drop when either pickup is chosen separately, evidently, you have the neck pickup and/or the pickup selector switch wired incorrectly.

The guitar is wired up just the way it states with the wiring diagram that came with the pickups. Do you think i can eliminate one of the neck wires and wire it like a standard tele? and which one do i disconect? you can see the diagram shows the white wire sodered to the middle? i dont get it?

No.

Forget that wiring. Wire it like this:

And continue to solder the yellow neck wire to ground.

ALL wires of the neck pickup get used. Solder the white wire from the neck pickup to the upper left terminal of the switch as shown in the diagram. Solder the black AND yellow wires of the neck pickup to ground; specifically, to the back of the volume pot.
