Hi,

I´ve just instaled a set of fender texas special pickups on my MIM strat.
But i notice that the two high strings (B and E) has lower volume/attack than the others.

I have played with the pickup height but it still´s the same.

I´ve replaced the original pots at the same time with cts ones but mistakenly the cts are 250K and the originals are 500K. Could this change contribute for the problem? I don´t think so, because in that case have afected the overal brightness of the guitar and not only the two strings.

Give me your thoughts.

Sorry about my english

The 250k pots are correct for single-coil pickups.

What tone caps are you using?

Welcome.

The pots (and capacitor for that matter) are irrelevant in this situation.

Believe it or not, the problem you have is 'normal' and rampant. The Texas Specials have a staggered magnet height which dates back to a mid 20th Century design. This design was for a wound G string where the lightest string gauge set started with a .012 for the high E. Unfortunately, nothing can be done to correct this with the Texas Specials. You can only minimize the problem by lowering the bass side of the pickups where the strings will balance better with the exception of the G string which will then become too loud.

There's nothing wrong with your English.

When i strum a chord it´s not very perceptible but when i solo on the two strings and attack them harder is noticeable that it looses punch.

I start to think that maybe have to do with the low string gauge (09s).

What string gauge you use with texas special?

Changing to a 10-46 set should provide a small but perceptible change in the guitar's volume.

I use .009s with EVERY pickup set.

I said that suspected from the light gauge of the strings because even with the guitar disconected from the amp, the two high strings makes the same kind of problem. Without atack when i play harder.

today i traded the texas special neck pickup with the old one that came with the guitar, to hear the diference.

Well, what a diference! The old pickups are flat poles from a squier and the two high strings simply has the same volume and attack as the rest of the strings.
With texas specials the two strings sounds dead without punch and i can´t have this balance between strings.

Can my new texas special set come with problems?

This question has been answered already in my first post and applies to ALL Texas Specials sets as they ALL have the same magnet stagger.

Post pictures of the pickups and your pickguard installation, so we can know for sure that you´ve got the real thing and properly installed.

I don´t have pictures right now but the pickups are original for sure.
They have the blue and red dots at the back and the custom shop sticker.

I have instaled the pu´s exactly as the instructions that came with them from fender.

As Martian has pointed out a couple of times now, the problem you are having is due to the design of the Texas Specials. Your only alternatives are to angle them up on the treble side as he suggested or replace them with something with a modern stagger. There is nothing wrong with your pickups.

One way to get more clean/clear sustain is to tune down 1/2 step like the Jimmi/SRV style and use .10s. Strats with hot pickups sound great with the 1/2 down tune.

have TS's in my SRV Strat. I play with 10s. Have the pups mounted as flush with the pick gaurd as they can go but slightly higher on the treble side. No issues with punch or sustain at all. I play through old Fender amps.
Have heard that TS that come on the SRV Strats are diff than TS's that you buy as a set as far as the pole pieces and their staggering is concerned. Can't confirm or deny that however.

Heavier B and E strings would help, although you have already changed it out!

I love my TSs with no issues, but mine are in an old early 70s Ibanez Strat!
