I currently have a knock-off Strat that I want to make ridiculously versatile. (and because I can and it will give me a lot of options and fun to be had) :D

Question is... I don't really know how to wire it up. I know the basics of coil-splitting and switching, but unfortunately this is going to be pretty complex to wire correctly.

I am fairly new to guitar playing and want to be able to get dual Humbucker sounds more akin to a Les Paul, but I also want to have the single coil Fender Strat sound. (mainly because I like a ton of different styles and don't have enough money to put down on 3 different guitars :( ) Pretty much I want to make a Les Stratopauler :D

So for the combinations that I would like to have

Humbucker sounds...
Neck (Humbucker) only
Neck and Bridge (HB) (no middle pickup)
Bridge (HB) only

For Strat Sounds...
Neck (Coil-split) only
Neck (CS) and Middle (hum-canceling)
Middle only
Middle and Bridge (CS) (hum-canceling)
Bridge (CS) only

And for other combinations...
Neck (HB) and Middle
Middle and Bridge (HB)
Neck and Bridge (North coil of Neck pick-up and South coil of Bridge pick-up)
Neck and Bridge (South coil of Neck and north coil of Bridge)

For pot uses...
Volume pot would stay master volume.
Tone 1 would be neck and middle pickups (instead of just neck)
Tone 2 would become bridge pickup tone only (instead of middle)

I would like to keep the look roughly the same so if it can be done using three push/pull pots and a 5-way super switch that would be awesome. :D

I will be buying completely new pickups probably (GFS Vintage Extra Hot Pair or a Bigmouth Pair for the humbuckers, and a Texas Special-type for the single coil)

Also, if you have suggestions for other pickups that don't break bank please let me know! (from what I have read GFS are awesome pickups especially for the price, but I have never had first-hand experience with them or know anyone who has)

So if you kept with me for all of that... suggestions? =)

Howdy and Welcome!

I can provide you with various wiring diagrams that you can choose from.

All will maintain the look of your Strats controls.

Bare with me as I pretty busy at the moment but I'll post the diagrams here at some point during the week.

Hope this helps! :D

Andy

Howdy!

Unfortunately I am unable to work out a diagram for you that will give you all the pickup combinations on your list just using push/pull pots.

However, If you were to consider having two DP/DT switches (on/off/on) I can. The switches can be positioned in between the pots.

Let me know if this is something you would be interested in and I'll get started.

Andy

I have purchased several books and have spent many hours on the net trying to figure
out how to wire my HSH strat in a way that I can be happy with. Every time I thought I had all of the things I would need, I would find I needed another part and would have to order it and wait some more. Now that I have everything, I am going nuts, not sure of myself and my abilities. Instead of taking off the strings and pickguard on the guitar I want to do this to, I decided to do a test run of sorts. The setup in the picture was just to prove that I could do a blender setup for my neck and bridge humbucker pups. I would like to have the following in my setup:
1.) Neck and bridge pups using 500K blender switch in place of lower tone switch
2.) 5 position switch to be set up where 5 is bridge only/ 4 is Middle tex mex and neck split humbucker on a push pull middle tone switch/ 3 is neck 4 wire humbucker / 2 is neck humbucker split ? and 1 pos will be mix of neck and bridge, that the blender and push pull will have an effect on sound too.

The Fender S1 system would have been nice. I am confused about where to start with this. When I take the actual guitar apart, I dont want to sit there and let the neck get warped from no tension, because I cant get it back together in a timely fashion. I bought a Seymore Duncan Liberator 500K as my Volume, a Dimazio 500K push/pull and a blender pot, 500K for my neck and Bridge.

The model 59 SD pup for my bridge has only one hot wire with a braided ground. I was told I may want to put shrink wrap around the braid, except where it needs to ground.
My original Tex Mex in the middle makes it where I have to change the green and black as SD papers that came with pups says I need to do that....I did not as the guitar sits now, and the neck is very quiet sound wise compared to the other pups. The Neck Hot rail is the only pup that has 4 wires and can be split. Would I want to do one of the rails from this with the middle pup to cancel humm and get a different sound??? So many options......... DO I start with the pup hot wire and go to switch and then out to VOL and then to Tone and/or blender, and then to out jack or is there a certain order that you have to go with...... sorry Im going on and on....This is just very daunting for me.

Since your Strat is routed for HSH, you can always convert your guitar into an HHH by throwing a rail or any single coil-sized humbucker in the middle slot. IMO the HHH config is by far the most versatile.

Hi Andy....I have spent hours and hours online, have driven to guitar center for help only to have the luthier tell me he would have to send it out. I bought a Mega E Switch and the blender and the push pull pot and I have the blender all figured out. Now for splitting the neck pup and getting the push pull to work with the middle tex mex so as to cancel hum but have a different tone. The Mega Switch E bottom right picture shows a HSS or a HSH and says the middle 3 pos will be neck and bridge, and that was my main thing I wanted. I just dont understand wiring colors, as I have been told its easier to flip the one tex mex colors instead of the SD ones. Thanks for your help.

I had about 5 different people say they would draw something up for me and not a single person came through. I bought 2 books and made a bunch of jumpers to do some ohm testing and I was able to get the blender working just fine in my tests, but the company I paid 32 bucks to said to remover the jumper and so did the people at SD, so I followed their instructions and now its over a week and my guitar hardly functions at all. Of the 5 positions on my model E mega switch, 3 dont work at all unless I turn my blender from 5 to 0 or from 5 to 10 The push pull makes some differences some times, but I dont think only 3 wires is enough going to it. The top positions should have something jumped or something?

I sent TONS of photos and descriptions and the first drawing I got back had my bridge as a 4 wire and I told them a million times it was a one wire with a braid ground/neutral. They only drew my blender with 3 tabs instead of 6. The second drawing did not include my 500K SD Liberator, so I did not install that, but at least I used a metal washer to ground all the grounds to and not on my tone or blender. Here is the first drawing:

Here is the revised drawing that I used and got the following results:

Here is how my guitar is as it sits now. I removed the jumpers I had already done and tested in my blender, and did everything according to your drawing.

Pos 5 ( furthest away from neck on mega sw) : No Sound at all, until blender is turned CCW. Blender acts like a vol sw. Push Pull does nothing
Pos 4 No sound at all not matter what you do.
Pos 3 No sound unless you move the blender either way.... if 5 on tone knob is neutral and 0 and 10 are the extremes, then you have to go to either end to have anything happen, so its not Blending, which is what the Mega Switch and blender in number 3 was my most important thing I wanted done... PP (not sure...may not have checked, but without blend, it did not much matter)
Pos 2 PP makes no change, but blender seems to change tone
Pos 1 No sound unless blender is fully clockwise. Push Pull makes a BIG difference.

If I fiddle with the blender, I do like some of the sounds I do get, but I was hoping for the 5 positions to sound a certain way and then if you pulled up on the push pull it would make different tones too. The blender was for the neck and bridge to on 5 to be equal or for me to be able to kick one in or another If I desired. Anyone have any ideas ????
