Where is it located?

There are usualy two types of caps used in guitars. One is the tone cap located on one or both of the tone controls and the second is a treble bleed cap located on the volume control. The use of the first cap should be obvious. The second cap is used to prevent loss of highs as the volume control is turned down. Some people like it, others don't.

Howdy!

The Specials Capacitor (SC) is a 0.05mf ceramic cap and is part of the Fenders S-1 Switching System.

The SC is used to cut some of the higher frequencies when engaged. On the pre 2010 Dlx models it was applied to the Neck or Bridge pickups in positions 4 & 2 on the Five way with the S-1 switch down.

I replaced my stock SC cap with a better quality 0.022mf though I'm considering swapping that for a 0.033mf.

I haven't had a go on the 2010 models so can't comment on that.

Hope this helps

Andy

I've just had a quick peek at the spec sheet for your Dlx Strat and the SC is only used in position 4 with the S-1 switch on.

I wouldn't worry about it to much. Should be fine. :D

What appears to be a cap is shown on the back of the S-1 switch on page 2. However, there is no part number assigned to it and it doesn't appear in the parts list. How is the function of this "Special" cap any different from that of a tone control in those positions you mentioned?

Bar the obvious lack of variable resistor the SC only effects the Neck (in parallel) when in series with the Middle pup in position 2 or the Bridge (in parallel) when in series with the Middle pup in position 4. A Standard tone control would effect both the Neck and Middle pups however they are wired due to the nature of the 5 way used. The SC is pre 5 way....

Imagine a humbucker with a fixed cap on the top coil. Standard tone control will effect both coils.

Andy

Edit: added a bit...:D
