I have a standard Mexican Fender Stratocaster and I want more life out of it. Currently I am looking into changing out the pickups. I have narrowed down my selection to

1. Fender Custom Shop Fat 50's Strat Pups - I like what I am hearing about these nice Bass response with out harsh mids. middle pick up is reversed to cancel out hum. But do I want that 50's tone? I Still want versatility.

2. Fender Custom Shop Texas Specials - OMG who doesnt want that beefy bark that SRV had. It was killer and still is but I dont want to limit my tone to just Blues and country. O loved SRV's tone but I dont want to replicate it. I wouldnt mind replicating his guitar though, which brings me to number 3.

3. Vintage '57/'62 Strat Pups - These seemed to be the most versitile with "glistening highs and warm lows that are unqeustionably vintage" but what about mids? Also the middle pickup is not reversed so you gonna have some hum. So what exactly is this hum were talking about? The Ground hum when you touch the strings it goes away?

Has any one got just a basic opinion? I would love to hear it
Thanks
from another local tone junkie.

"Ground hum" is not the same as extraneous ambient electro-magnetic interference. In the latter case, it's caused by RF fields generated by external devices such as televisons, computers, video games, oscillating electric fans, even neon beer signs and walk-in refrigerators. Additional shielding may help tame it but it will always be a factor that affects true single-coil pickup performance to some degree.

As for your perception of the Fat '50s as being somewhat of a "one-trick pony", you are mistaken -- they do most rock and country genres extremely well (as do the 57/62's).

Well I rather fancy the '57/'62 pick up due to the fact that they come with a set of pots. And since I have a mexi-strat, I figured that it would be an excuse to swap out the electronics.

I doubt that you'll be disappointed. And the bonus pots are just "extra gravy".

Go for it.

It really depends on what sound you are going for. Fender has a lot of good pickups of all different ranges. DiMarzio has pretty good pickups as well. Personally, Im a Seymour Duncan kinda guy. I also love having humbuckers in my guitars, even if they need to be stacked. Try the JB stacked humbucker or the 59 stacked humbucker. I also liked the Carvin AP11's a lot. Fender Lace Sensors are really nice. You can also look into the newer SCN pickups.
