I have a MIM Strat HSS and find that it sounds a little too hot with the volume all the way up playing through a clean setting. The pickups are the classic Fenders with ceramic magnets in them. I play in the neck position alot with the tone on about 3. I'm thinking of changing the pickups but would like opinions of others that have the same guitar. Alder body with a maple neck, Standard HSS made in Mexico. I prefer the neck position for my clean rythm and clean lead, and then I switch down to the 5'th position for that mezmerizing lead sound. I only use the humbucker for distortion leads, I kind of like it but doesn't give me the versatility. I want a pickup or set of pickups that won't overrespond. My pickups are also adjusted pretty low. Are there any opinions out there?

so you want lower output neck/mid pickups (single coil) and a distortion-friendly bridge hb?

yeah! what about the tex mex's? I like smooth tone during clean setting, and a clear crunch for distortion.

Pickups are a matter of taste for sure but here's an opinion on what I've done with mine. I have an Arctic White Standard (MIM) HSS Strat and I recently replaced the Humbucker with a Seymour Duncan JB and for the middle and neck pickups I put Fender Fat 50's. The 4th position which splits the humbucker is wired out of phase. The guitar is now insane. It can really produce lots of tone from Warm Blues (50's) to Distorted Metal (JB) and everything in between. The out of phase position has a really cool 'honk' to it that just sounds great by itself but is sick with a flange, reverb or other effects.

I used to have a little buyers remorse with the guitar. I pretty much regretted going cheap and not pulling the trigger on an American Standard. Now that I've upgraded the electronics I couldn't be happier and wouldn't trade it for anything short of a limited run Relic. Next step, Schaller locking tuners...

All in all, the stock pickups aren't all that great, at least not in my opinion. You're on the right track to upgrade and will be stunned by the difference. Do some research, find the sounds you like and go from there.
