I need a little help. I'm going to be making some changes to my Strat (swapping out the stock PU's to Texas Specials and a SD Pearly Gates on the bridge). In the meantime I'd like to fix 2 things I really don't care for.

With everything stock, in position 2 only the front coil of my HB is selected along with my Middle PU. 2nd, the HB isn't controlled by either tone pot, in setting.

What I'd like to do is actually 2 things.

1st I'd like to have the full HB selected at position 2 like it is in position 1, not just the top coil.

2nd, I'd like to have the HB controlled by the same pot that controls the tone on my neck PU.

This way when I select position 2, I can control the tone on both the middle PU and the HB while at the same time using the full HB.

Can someone help me with a diagram that would accomplish this?

Welcome!

I'm confused with your desired function of the tone pots. I presume you mean you want the upper tone pot to control the neck pickup and the lower tone pot to control the middle and bridge pickup (at full HB power). If this is correct, READ MY ENTIRE POST FIRST and then begin.

You would wire the guitar to this diagram:

http://www.strat-talk.com/forum/members ... wiring.gif

There will be one modification to the pickup selector switch and one to the HB.

Per the above diagram, you will see the on the pickup selector switch that on the top half of the switch that there is one unused terminal second from the left. Solder a linking wire from that terminal to the terminal immediately to the right of it. This will make your lower tone control work for both the middle and bridge pickup.

As to getting full HB power from the Pearly Gates, solder its red and white wires together and tape them off. Wire its bare and black wires to ground, meaning, the back of the volume pot. Lastly, solder its green wire to where the above diagram indicates to solder the bridge pickup to selector switch.

If your middle and bridge pickup are out of phase with each other, simply reverse the black and green wires of the PG.

Good luck and if you have any questions, just yell!

Martian,

That's almost exactly what I'm looking for. So in order to always run the HB at full power just the green wire needs to be connected to the switch. The black/bare go to ground and the red/white are taped together, got it!

I want the tone pots to work separately in all positions. For example like it does in position 4... pot 1 = master volume; pot 2 = neck tone; pot 3 = middle tone

For switch position 2 I want pot 2 to control my bridge/HB tone. While pot 3 continues to control my middle pickup. This way I'll have independent tone adjustment in all switch positions.

If I follow what you're saying then it should be as simple as soldering a jumper from where the pot 2 is connected to the switch to the blank slot that you were talking about.

Is that correct?

Let's make sure we have our terms in order:
Position #1 would be the neck pickup by itself whereas Position #5 would be the bridge pickup by itself.

The way I explained the wiring, the UPPER tone pot (the one directly below the master volume pot) is assigned to the NECK pickup whereas the LOWER tone pot is assigned to the MIDDLE and BRIDGE pickups. So, any time these respective pickups are activated, so will their assigned tone pot be.
