Double check all your connections for clean solder joints. Volume control on my Strat starts at about 2 - 2.5.

I use the Jimmie Vaughn wiring also but I have added the Greasbucket circuit to both tone pots. With the two Greasebuckets there is no physical connection between the two tone pots. They are completely independent. If you don't want to do the full Greasebucket, you can just add a second tone cap. Attach it to the center lug of tone pot two and the case of tone pot 2 and cut the wire that connects tone pot 1 to tone pot 2.

Thanks for the tip, gonna leave it how it is for now an see how it goes but will defiantly consider adding the extra tone cap in the future, can see how that could work well.
But will open it up once more an double check all the joints.
Thanks for all your help and advice
All the best
Dan.

Checked the soldering over an all is good and well (put the low input down to a dodgy lead) so getting volume at 2.5 - 3 now so all good there.

Ive altered my diagram to what you have suggested to add another cap to tone pot #2 just to double check.

What about the wire that connects all three pots together, leave that ware it is I'm guessing ?

Image

So what are the advantages of doing this ? and could you explain the Greasebucket system that you mentioned to me, never heard of it before.
Thanks again !

Yep, you got it right.

I'm not sure that there is a real advantage with this configuration over the single cap version, but I like it becasue there is no chance for one tone cap to affect the other tone pot. Both circuits are separate and independent.

As for the Greasebucket tone circuit, see the wiring diagram on page 2 and the parts list on page 3 in the link below. Now that you know how to draw/read a wiring diagram, this should be easy to figure out. :D The Greasebucket advantage is that it prevents the sound from getting muddy as you roll the tone control down. It keeps things sounding smooth all the way down.

Interesting stuff, the Greasebucket, but don't think its period to the guitar i have (correct me if wrong on that).

I can see the logic in using two caps for the way the pots are now split/distributed so will keep that thought in mind.
Its working an sounding great at the moment I'm getting some really nice bluesy tones out of it been playing it all evening so rather than "keep fixing it till it is bust" gonna leave it alone, well for now at least

Thanks again for all your help an all the best, Dan.

Period correct? No, But them neither are your Texas Specials.

Now let me tell you about vintage Gibson wiring as applied to a Strat.

Very true on the Texas Specials !
That guitar of mine is taking on a whole new personality :D
When i brought the pickups i hunted down some extra lengths of bradded/wax coated/solid core wire to keep all the wiring the same as the wire that came attached to the TS's even though didn't use a lot of it as there was plenty of off cuts from the PU's but seeing as id never worked with it before..... best to have a bit more than needed.

Vintage Gibson wiring, fill me in, sounds interesting :)

I am a inveterate tweaker. I replaced the stock pickups in my MIM Standard Strat with Fender SCNs. Then I replaced the stock pots with CTS pots and wired the bridge pickup to the tone control with the middle pickup. I also replaced the stock switch with a CRL switch. Later I changed the wiring to the Jimmy Vaughn style with two tone caps. I also added a treble bleed to the volume pot. Next I changed the tone circuit to the Greasebucket on both tone pots. Finally, I removed the treble bleed and wired the volume pot per the Gibson vintage wiring. I stopped there. Tone is spectacular. :D

I've done similar mods to my other two electrics (Washburn Lyon and Ibanez GRGA32) and am now getting ready to tackle a Yamaha bass that my next door neighbor gave me.

Sure. Just start your own thread instead of hijacking someone else's.
