As a long time Fender employee, she has been winding Fender pickups to preordained Fender specifications throughout the various Fender dynasties. Many players seem to feel that she imbues a singular tonality to the pickups she winds which are the pinnacle of authentic Fender tonality.

Perhaps.

But it's the kind of hype that sells.

A little hype, maybe ? However, there is a lot to winding a pickup that you have to get right and she has developed that touch (wire tension, the scatter pattern she uses ,etc.) ! I've had 3 different handwound set's from her with different magnet's (A2,A4,A5) and there was a very good tone to each. There are other pickup maker's out there that are very good. I don't think Fender said "hey let's make Abby a legend". No, it was somebody saying "damn those pickup's sound good who wound them 'cause I want some !!! AND there it is ! Strictly MHO.

I don't think Abby do winding on the pickup itself now , she must have 80, and is no secret to winding a pickup in 2011,
Even in '50 IMO his p.u. could be all different (not so much but not the same)
It's marketting.

I don't believe that Fender by law can say that they are Abby hand wound Pup's if they are not and charge the money that they charge not to mention false advertising and fraud. I agree her legend has grown with time and there is some hype but she wind's the Pup's herself. I believe that the magnet's and bobbin's are put together by machine and
then they come to her for winding. I understand she has an apprentice now, her name is Josefina.

Txwang has hit the nail on the head here, while I did not work where they wind the pick-ups, I have seen it done, and I can plainly say, it is an art form to do it right.

And experience is something you just can't teach, you have to acquire it.

txtwang, I just want to say that is not a mystery how to built good pickup and no need to have Ybarra for teacher.

And I have lot of respect for Abigdail Ybarra and all of Fender workers

stratele52, Abby has been winding PuP's for over 50 yrs. and in that time I'm sure she may have developed a particular way of doing thing's. I believe Fender is just trying to keep that way of doing thing's going with Josefina. Baker's, chef's, electrician's have people that they teach. Believe me when I say that Lollar, Duncan, DeMarzio ALL wound more PuP's than we can count before they got it right. It's a skill not easy to do !
You're probably right but it's cool that we can talk about it. Thank you 8)

Then why are there so many variations of "good" pickups on the market by both Fender and aftermarket/boutique manufacturers? By this line of reasoning there should be only one way to make a "good" pickup.
