Musician's friend is having a sale and I'm thinking of going ahead with a purchase of Fender Fat 50s. But they also have a sale on Texas Specials so I'm torn. I love the Texas Specials, I have them installed on my Squier. I want something similar, but yet different for my MIM Strat. I'm thinking the Fat 50s might fit the bill. I want something more punchy than vintage, but maybe a little cleaner and stratty sounding than Texas Specials. But I've never played a Strat with a set of Fat 50s and I already know I love the Texas Specials so maybe it would be best to go with another set of those.

I dunno, for people with the Fat 50s how do you like them? And for people who've played both the Fat 50s and Texas Specials, how would you say they compare?

You've pretty much described the Fat 50s right here.

texasguitarslinger,

They're in my '82 Squier JV '57 Stratocaster, they sound like you described.

Gorgeous "piece of ash", lostindesert!

I concur with the previous assessements of the Fat '50s. I have that set in an ash-bodied Mary Kaye hardtail Strat and they positively punch, especially with a vintage Fender tube amp. Expect fat chunky rhythm tones when chording and robust and articulate single notes when soloing. I think they sound every bit as tasty as Fralin Vintage Hots (at half the price!). YMMV
