I recently just saved up for my stat..and lovin it. I mostly bought it for its clean sound, but as of late I want to get higher gain pickups, mainly in the bridge.

I am sort of confused of which ones to buy, or where to narrow my choices down. I know for sure I want a hotrail type style.. no humbucker.

So far it seems like Semour Duncan or Dimarzio is the way to go.

Are there any high gain pickups that still keep that fender sound when on clean?

How good is the Dimarzio Chopper?... it seems like a pretty good pickup.

What are some good complementary neck and middle pickups?

* I'm not looking for a extremely high gain pickup, but one that will give me the disortion to play most metal/hard rock.

i have a sd hotrails in my neck position and my dad has one in his bridge position. these are great pickups, you kinda lose your single coil sound but they are nice

Welcome and congrats on your new Strat!

Most rails types are stacked humbuckers (HBs). Do you mean you don't want a 'traditional' humbucker where two coils are side by side for your bridge pickup?

There is a line where high gain pickups stop sounding like single coils. The DiMarzio Chopper definitely crosses this line. Note that the Chopper is a HB. It is an EXTREMELY popular pickup. Call me crazy but I have one and I've yet to use it as I'm totally satisfied with my current setup.

For a noticeably higher output pickup that is and still retains the single coil characteristics, you might want to consider a Duncan SSL-5 or SSL-6. The difference between the two is staggered polepieces vs. even polepieces.

We could better advise you for not only the bridge pickup but for the other two if you would answer my HB question above.

yeh i like the stacked ones better than the side by side. I think I wanna cross that like too....lol with that chopper as well.

I also heard if I went with the traditional side by side I would also have to widen my pickguard and what not, whereas putting in the stacked ones would be easier.

I guess what would compliment this type of pickup then.

*I would like to keep some of that traditional strat sound in the neck and middle as well. I just want some agression in the bridge, sorta like the Smashing Pumpkins.

Obviously then, the Chopper would serve you well along with DiMarzio Fast Tracks for the middle and neck positions.

You heard correctly with the side by side HBs and having to widen the pickguard.

With whatever choices you make, good luck!
