Hi everyone,

I have a am std strat, with CS Texas Special, and recently got a second am std strat for back up. I love the texas specials, but but thought about getting something a little different for the new one, just to have an alternative option. I'd like to have a rich and fat sound like the TS, but needs them to be able to clean up nicely when lowering the volume on the guitar. I do that a lot on my #1 strat with the TS, to make the tone come out more on softer songs. So I thought about getting kind of like a Gilmour set up, meaning CS fat'50 neck, CS'69 bridge and an Seymour Duncan SSL 5 in the neck. Any thoughts or other options you might think of? Are those "hot wired" like the TS?Also I'd like to stay with the single coil, as the noiseless or any type of stacked humbucker does not cut through the mix enough for me.

Thanks!

Welcome.

I don't particularly favor one premier pickup company over the other. Yet by sheer coincidence I use all Duncans in my Strat. I have an SSL-2 in the neck, an SSL-6 in the middle and an SSL-3 in the bridge. I've run the gamut trying out all the 'significant' brands and their single coil offerings and in the final analysis, the above trio fulfills all my requirements which in part, include yours as stated above. I've said this several times before: I get bells, balls and everything in between.

Straying away from the whole fender scene (not that don't I love it), I've heard good things about neodymium if you want clean. IMHO, it's all too trebley in my taste though, but I guess changing some tone caps would even things out. xD

I'm thinking of ordering these with a Fender HM Strat routed for HSH (see though red cherry on top of a flamed maple top) and put some piezo saddles, wiring it to a pot for volume control, and having one pot for both tone controls. 8)

Neodymium is yet another variation of a ceramic magnet. Hence, the clean and extreme treble. Changing caps is superfluous. Rather, turning down the tone pot with the existing cap would be more beneficial.

It is?! Well, I learn something new everyday xD
Any other tips to get darker sounds out of ceramics then? o:

Ceramics by nature are an "in your face" type magnet. Even if you changed the pots and caps, you'll get a fizzy, rather brittle sound as a result. A 10 band (or so) graphic EQ pedal MAY help by zapping some of the offending frequencies but again, you may run the risk of just having a loud, clanky pickup.
