I have an AVRI 57. I'm considering putting different pups in it. It has a good blues SRV'ish sound in the fourth switch position. However the buzz is pretty loud with my amp volume turned up. Do the Texas Special pups buzz too. Which ones can I use and keep the sound but lose the buzz? Also I have an 02 "American Series" Strat. It's called simply American Stratocaster it's basically an American Standard Strat but in 02 they called it by another name. "American Stratocaster". This guitar has no buzz at all in the 2 and 4 position but it buzzes like hell in the other 3 positions. What's up with that? Advice is greatly appreciated. I've been in love with strats since I was 10 yrs old.(34 now) I've just never gotten in to learning all this stuff there is to know about pups and necks and radius's and fret sizes. I've become obsessed with all this stuff. Thanks in advance for your help guys.

Although I've played Strat's in the past, I strictly play Tele's now, but both Fender models have this in common: single coil pickups.

Single coil pickups are notorious for buzz. It's the nature of the beast and it's called "60-cycle hum". Additionally, single coil pickups are prone to pick up ambient electronic interference from house current and nearby electronic devices. The interference enhances the buzz. All this buzz is enhanced by an amplifier.

In switch positions 1, 3 and 5, only one pickup is on, so you get buzz. In switch positions 2 and 4, two pickups are on simultaneously; hence, no buzz.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for the buzz, but you can make it better, by properly shielding the pickup and control cavities with copper tape or paint shielding - and by making sure that all your pickups and bridge are properly grounded. It's not a costly process, but it is tedious work.

Some players consider the buzz to be part of the Strat or Tele mystique, and will leave well enough alone (I am in this group), while others will be relentless in their efforts to minimize the buzz.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

I agree a good shielding and grounding job would probably solve the prob.

It could, but if not, these EBtech hum eliminators work really fine :

+1 to those above.

Other factors that excentuates the noise are amp and effects. Running an amp up into overdrive on tubes will enhance the noise, as well as running a OD or distortion pedal up in high levels.
