I just bought a 2004 50th anniversary Strat. The previous owner took good care of it -- polished, well-kept, and so I am suspicious that some of the pickup magnets have a bit of rust on them.

The owner said he was buying a different Strat with this sale and it makes me wonder if he took the hand-wound custom single coils with him and replaced them with some standard Strat pickups.

Is there an easy way to identify the Fender custom-wound single coils under the pick guard? Maybe a label to look for or color-coded wiring?

Thanks

The stock pickups in the 50th Anniversary Strat are not hand wound. They were all wound by Abby and her group, but they are all machine wound. The stock pickups have vintage style black fiber bobbins with white & black plastic covered leads. I don't know of any other Fender pickup with that conbination of features. Another thing that is unique about these pickups is that the G-string pole is lower than the D-string pole. Most other Custom Shop pickups have a G-string pole that is equal to or even taller than the D-string pole.

Posting pictures can also help us help you identifying them...

Thanks for your reply.

I've since learned that the 50th anniversary Strats with rosewood fretboards like mine are regular USA standard Strats, and not a special issue with unique pickups.
