I purchased an AV '57 Reissue off of e-bay from a dealer who has some new old stock guitars. I'm probably gonna install the 5-way switch when the guitar arrives in a couple of days. I'm pretty good at working on stuff however I've never worked on an electric guitar. Is installing the switch something a beginner can possibly do or should I take my Strat to Guitar Center and let them do it?

Whatever you do don't let Guitar Center work on that fine guitar!! If you can solder it's not that hard but, I suggest you talk to some of our electronic gurus right here on the forum for guidance. Ask for member Martian to help you out, He is one of our best. Start a ask Martian thread and he'll get with you. Good luck and congrats on your guitar!!

Okay. Thanks for the warning about Guitar Center. I thought they were good at that stuff. But I will take your advice. Thanks again

+1 on not letting GC touch it.

Soldering is not hard. Go to Home Depot and buy a Weber 40 Watt for $17.45. It has everything you need (except a wet sponge and wire cutters).

http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xgy/R-100391613/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

Then buy/find a few cheap potentometers (or anything with metal lugs) from Radio Shack, and some 22 AWG Hookup Wire (you can buy a life time supply for under $10). If you're tight on $$, then the wire from a dead pair of iPod headphones will work perfectly.

Now just practice cutting and stripping wire. Then practice soldering and de-soldering wires on the lugs.

Take your time (let the iron get good and hot; about 5-10 mins), and try not to brand your cat.

Once you get the hang of it check out the wiring diagram on fender.com:

http://support.fender.com/diagrams/stratocaster/0131002B/SD0131002BPg2.pdf

Wiring a 3-way switch and a 5-way switch is EXACTLY the same (just keep the diagram handy, because you will forget the jumper wire).

One last tip. When it comes time to solder, get yourself a couple old hand or dish towels. Get them wet and put them over any exposed part of the guitar. Solder can drip and splatter. You don't want 700 degree solder hitting your nice paint.

Good Luck:

BTW, this probably took me longer to write, than it will for you to make the switch.
