Ok, I'm a big Ritchie Blackmore fan.
And while I realize I won't sound like him ... ever ...
I wanna try replicate the real thing as far as I can.

Let's see, I've got a olympic white 70's RI strat, so
the pure looks of it is pretty close, but I need help
as far as pickups go.

Now, like I said in the beginning, I don't want to replicate
Ritchie himself, rather the guitar he's using, so what pickups
where used in those '70s CBS strats and what's the closest
ones soundwise that you can get today ? :)

Mine had pretty much standard non-staggered Alnico V magnets about 5.75K on the neck and middle and about 7K on the bridge. GFS Greybottoms will get you real close to that sound.

I don't know what was used on the stock Strats of that era, but I seen to recall that Blackmore used SD Quarter Pound, then at some point used Lace Sensors. The Fender RB signature model has the SD's. The middle pickup is a dummy; the Man In Black didn't use it and said it got in the way of his picking.

What I'd like to know is how he got the sound during the 80's Rainbow era. His solos had a sort of gritty, metallic, slightly screechy quality. Maybe a tape flange?

A friend of mine has a 75 strat. At some point in the past 35 years he had someone install Seymour Duncans (a 1/4pounder in the neck and a Hotrails in the Bridge). At his request, I reinstalled the original pickups he kept for many years.

The originals were about 5.2ohms in the middle and neck and about 5.7ohms in the bridge. They appeared to be Alnico with stagerd poles and black and white wires. One thing supprised me was the volume of the pickups were much louder than the 1/4pounder I removed, and the tone was very clear and articulate top to bottom. He seems much happier with this set up.

The 1/4 pounder was ceramic type magnet with large pole pices and a magnet on the bottom of the pickup. I had a set of these in an old 83 Ibanez Roadstar and it was not to good: could not get warm clear sound and the magnets made it impossible to get the pickup set near the strings. However, back in the day it was about distortion and long hair rock.

If you are seeking early 70s pickups they may be of the late 60s era.

Happy hunting.

Further research reveals that he didn't actually use th QPs, but rather Schecter F-500-Ts.

I don't care that much for ceramic magnet pickups either.

God made AlNiCo. All the rest is Man's work.
