Hi

I am starting to use the Fender Super Bullets Strings 3250 L, 009 – 042 gauge from both the plastic and boxed packaging. I have used the ones from the plastic packaging but not yet the new boxed ones. I use this coz it’s the most economical I know that works well with vintage tremolo.

Lately I have been breaking the D strings in very short time (like in a day), I don’t think its my saddle coz it used to take me a while to break strings and if I happened to break one it will be from the other strings. I do lubricate my nut, saddle and anywhere there is friction. I think I string the strings proper enough (using Bill Baker method)

Is there a difference between the plastic and boxed packaging in terms of quality? I got the guitar with bullet ends in it so I don’t know from what kind of packaging not until I bought spares recently. Or has there been some manufacturing defect on the D string lately or from any batch?

I was wondering whether it is possible to get loose spare bullet strings esp. if one frequently breaks the same string the most, because where I am (Malaysia) bullet end strings are not as popular as the others ball end type so guitar stores do not stock loose spares for bullets. How I wish they would see the importance of bullet ends that settles down faster on vintage tremolo that is in my finding improves tuning stability esp. after whammy. However most of them prefer to stock the more popular ball end strings which is commonly used.

Oh yeah tell me something I don't know I recalled breaking the G String form the 1st set of bullets I got that was already on the guitar, I tried to mix it with the ball ends spare. Seems that theres no harmony they don't mix well, probably difference in string tension or perhaps the order of tuning? Coz I went straight to winding the broken string thus creating the tension there 1st not in the usual order of tuning from high E to low E having informed that the lower strings needed more tension. Handling a Srat is a delicate matter unlike double locking that evens things out.

It would be a waste of all the other bullet end strings if one has the tendency to change the same string for spare from the pack. Especially if you had them on the day before and needed to change only the D string the next day for instance. I would appreciate some suggestions. Thank you.

Regards

Oh yeah something I'd like to add on, something that confuses me actually initially my strat has bullets. I changed to full set of ball ends or barrel ends rather by the looks of it. I discovered that it didn't stay in tune that well so i swaped back to full set of bullets and it did a good job.

Now here is the catch, recently I broke the D string I replaced it with a spare ball end coz I only had it on for less than a week. Suprisingly the ball end stayed in tune ok but now my B bullet end String went funny unlike when it was with all its bullet friends. String tension? spring tension and tuning order? hmmm beats me.

Here's another puzzle, recently I changed a set of bullets and unfortunately a day after I broke the D string again this time I had bullet spares coz I bought a dozen. This don't feel good coz I had to take one out of the whole pack not wanting the hassel of stringing the whole set, just did that the day before. I discovered that the tuning wasn't as good as when i changed the whole set? Any Scientific knowledege I should know? :?

Sounds like you may be buying them from a bad box. I used to buy them 15sets at a time until that happened to me. When you're on your 7th set in a fortnight it becomes a bit disconcerting. I stopped buying them in bulk after that.

Leave the lube alone, you should only do it once, if at all. Your lubricant may be corroding strings, or reacting with skin moisture to corrode the strings. A little unlikely because it would be more likely to happen on other strings too. But it is a possibility.

Look for alternate sources of lube. I only ever lube the nut and string tree. I use really waxy dental floss for that. You have it round the house, it doesn't stain the nut like graphite. Doesn't go everywhere like that much hyped nutsauce. Which incidentally is nothing but vaseline in a handy syringe. And it makes your guitar minty fresh.

Check them saddles for burr's. I use a nail polishing file to lightly rub over em with a little bit of jewellers rouge as a polish. Go really light and make sure you use a nail polishing file, not a nail file.

Headaches eh mate.

Breaking D strings?

Yeah, I agree with Niki and the times I've used them, I haven't had that problem.

Hey how often do u ppl normally change ur strings for good? meaning even if they are still intact.

Ok lets say u break the higher E after three days would you change the whole set? If not is it easy to find spare loose strings in your guitar store? Loose spare bullet ends easy to find yes/no? Do your Guitar Stores sell spares in the 1st place? Some guy from UK told me that he can't get a whammy bar and that UK dealers don't stock small parts.

Anyway I am just curious how things work at your part of the world. Oh yeah about breaking the D string could it be the Sambora Dead or Alive Lick? I was enjoying the pinch harmonics on the D. Hmmm but nothing happened when I had the ball end on, bad bullets maybe, but nevermind mind I have a dozen spare now. Just don't like the feeling when u have to change one string when the others are still good.

Oh yeah using grease as lubricant a bad thing?

Peace
