I was told the number of winds on the Fender American Standard are 7.8k neck, 7.8k middle, and 9.5k bridge.

Can anyone confirm these values?

Has the number of winds changed recently or over the years?

Welcome.

Those aren't the number of winds. Rather, they are DC resistance readings of each position's pickup coils. Notwithstanding, all appear to be rather high. From what I've personally metered, the neck and middle are typically in the very high 5K area and the bridge is in the very low 7K area.

Again, based on what I've personally metered over the years, the neck and middle have decreased with the opposite being true of the bridge pickup.

Thanks for your reply. I have a Strat Deluxe Plus and want to replace the pickups with Fralins which have similar output to the pickups on a Fender American Stratocaster.

Style/Position Neck: Middle: Bridge:
Vintage Hot 6 K 6 K 6.8 K
Real 54's 6 K 6 K 6.8 K
Blues Special 6.2 K 6.2 K 7.2 K
High Output (10%) 8 K 8 K 9.5 K
High Output (15%) 8.5 K 8.5 K 10 K
Steel Poled (42) 6 K 6 K 7 K
Steel Poled (43) 8.5 K 8.5 K 10 K

I thought the High Output was the most similar in output to the pickups on a Fender American Stratocaster.

What do you think?

Your welcome.

Obviously, if you are using DC resistance as the definitive factor, your observation wold be correct. However, you really should get this DC resistance thing out of your head as the definitive measurement of a pickup's output. So many more things go into the equation than just this. Further, just because the DC resistances you are comparing set to set being similar, this in no way is an indicator of how one set will sound compared to another either.

Just one example of many: DiMarzio has a low output, stacked humbucking pickup with a DC resistance of around 19K. This is a very flat sounding pickup as well.

Now if you are trying to duplicate your Fender pickups with Fralins, volume AND tone wise, I'd choose the Real 54s as the closest all around.

Excellent information. Thanks!!

I have a Fender American Stratocaster Deluxe. It came with 3 Fender Samarium Cobalt Noiseless pickups: 2 single-coils, one humbucker. I replaced the 2 single-coils with Fralin Blues Specials and the humbucker with a Fralin Unbucker. I am really happy with those pickups.

My Fender American Stratocaster Deluxe Plus is a work-in-progress. It came with a Fender Floyd Rose locking bridge. That was replaced with a American Standard two-point floating bridge. It also came with the Blue, Silver, and Red Lace Sensor pickup combination. I bought a loaded pickguard from a Fender American Special Stratocaster and put that in the Deluxe Plus so now it has Texas Specials. The Texas Specials are okay.

I am considering the Fralin High Output but now that you mentioned the Real 54s I might consider those as well. I am looking for something different from the Blues Specials which will compliment the Deluxe Plus and give me a different sounding guitar for my Fender arsenal. Noiseless pickups are also a consideration.

Any suggestions about what might be the best pickup choice for a Deluxe Plus?

Well, the only missing hole tone wise that I can see among your Strats is one with a real traditional, yet calibrated sound. Since you mentioned noiseless (humbucking stacks), I'd recommend a DiMarzio Area 67 in the neck position, a DiMarzio Area 58 in the middle position and a DiMarzio Area 61 in the bridge position. IMHO, this combo should serve you really well!

I am checking out loaded pickguards for Dimarzio. I have found a DiMarzio Area Model Prewired Pickguard. It has Area '58 pickup in the neck, Area '67 in the middle position, and an Area '61 at the bridge. Is this close enough?

What's the opinion on the Fralin Split Blades which are also noiseless?

What is the best choice for non-noiseless pickups?

Close enough. All you have to do is reverse the middle and neck pickups.

Every "boutique" pickup manufacturer has their specialty. Meaning and for example, if one wants a single coil the absolute closest to many old Fender pickups, IMO, Fralin is the best way to go. (Which answers your third question.) I would not choose Fralin however for Strat humbuckers as again IMO, DiMarzio, Duncan and others have a better handle on such things.

Awesome stuff!!

One last question: for Strat humbuckers you mentioned DiMarzio Area Pickups. For comparison purposes, which Strat humbuckers pickups from Duncan and others might I consider?

IMO, the only truly comparable ones to the DiMarzio Area series of Strat humbuckers are Kinman pickups. Many will argue that Kinmans are indeed better. Unfortunately, Kinman is beginning to price himself out of the pickup market where most players are concerned. Here is his website:
