I agree with Martian................ all this cap business is SNAKE OIL !!

I have a set of '69's and think the pots work nice with the .047µF cap.

3- 250K audio pots are good

I also have the bottom tone control wired to the bridge pup..............nice to take the treble down on that a hair now and then.

BTW, the cap doesn't really do JACK until you turn the tone pot.

When you get to about 7 or lower with a tone pot the cap comes into play. Then the higher the value cap, the more dark (faster) the tone will get as you turn it down.

All this crap about having "BETTER/DIFFERENT" tone out of an electric guitar just because you have a capacitor they use in the Space Shuttle is B.S.

>I´m looking for the All-Strat-Bell-Tone<

Set the pickups real low with the pickguard.

I will take issue with this statement of snake oil.

I am very much a skeptic, and I know the meaning of the trem "mental acoustics".
I put a new set of staring on my guitar, and i and a couple of my friends played it, to get a baseline.
That night I once again replaced the string (same brand and set) and replaced the cap with a paper and oil 22pf.
I played it, and I could hear a difference (For the better) and then I asked my friends to play it again, and i didn't tell them what I did to it. the pick up were left aloan.

Everyone without exception heard a difference, and two of them nailed it right away that I had changed out the cap with a paper and oil cap.

So yes, you will hear a difference.

The question come in then, is it a change you want?
If I was playing modern type metal, no I wouldn't, but since I play blues, yes it is a change I like and want.

set the pups low to improve string vibration and get a "green chicklet" cap at radio shack of your liking. they are the closest to the "paper in (snake) oil or wax" caps you can get believe it or not. without the stupid price. if you can tell the difference your a better listener than me. i use a .1 micro farad one with my 57/62 pups. i want as close to "vintage" as possible. i love the strat and 57 deluxe sound.

IMOP I don't think thats Radio Shack " green schicklets" is a good cap.

And, yes we can hear the difference with good ( does'nt mean expensive) cap.

I think I can resolve this whole issue once and for all. Consider this unscientific presentation I'm about to make yet it is true:

The two chief arguments:

1. Some will argue that although it is in no way preamped, a guitar's passive circuit becomes part of that amp's circuit once the guitar is plugged into the amp where of course, the guitar's capacitor(s) do indeed makes a vital difference in tone.

2. The other side of the argument is that the amp takes over and shapes the signal from the guitar where the guitar's passive circuit including the capacitor is not any kind of major tonal factor. In other words, its all about the amp.

The two chief 'no arguments':

1. The better the capacitors are in an amp, especially a tube one, the better the amp sounds. The better the amp, the more noticeable all the more, especially when those tubes heat up. Some amps sound better with certain types of capacitors for certain internal applications than others and vice-versa. There have been exhaustive A/B tests, all with 100% conclusiveness in this area. Even I can hear it!

2. If one is inclined to play with tons of overdrive and/or 20 pedals and/or through some kind of pod, the guitar's capacitor type is irrelevant as preamp after preamp severely masks the basic tonality of the guitar's circuit for better or for worse.

The bottom line: I personally cannot hear a specific type of guitar's capacitor making a difference, one over the other. Some claim they can and just like those born with Perfect Pitch (which I surely don't have), Perfect Pitch most certainly does indeed exist. So, within the realm of physics (aside from many of Eric Johnson's psychotic assertions), if someone can make instantaneous and always correct differentiations among notes, intervals and chords, in other words, can discern absolute frequencies absolutely, it is logical to presume that, again within the realm of physics, some must be able to hear absolute tonal shades absolutely as they are filtered through the various mechanical devices designed to filter them.

In conclusion: To those who can hear the difference in a guitar's capacitor, bravo! To those of us who can't, that's just our tough luck.

FWIW, I would presume that just as those among us strive to have near Perfect Pitch, one can also strive for the equivalent in terms of capacitor construction tonality. YMMV.

If I may add to what Martian has said, i do agree with it.

I have one pedal (The Peavey Delta stomp) which is a pre-amp multi effects pedal, and when I use it the tone knob on the guitar is almost useless, the solid state transtube just washes it out.

Most times I play with just a guitar, a monster cable and a good tube amp, so maybe this is why I can hear it so clearly.

I go back to the point I was making that it depends on the tone ans style you play, the most over-driven and possessed the less you will benefit from this mod.

The mfg. or type of capacitor doesn't mean squat.A vintage, orange drop or whatever is just for show(looks).I use orange drops cause that's what i use when I work on amps.Think about it.A caps characteristics affecting a "volt or less" of signal(from pup)is nil! When you view the caps in old Fender amps and gits, you are gazing at military surplus parts left over from Korea and even WW2.Leo got his electronic parts for (next to)nothing.A point with this cap that does affect tone however(much more important than brand)is making sure the foil side of the cap is the grounded side of the cap.Reading the info on cap from left to right the foil side lead is on the right.Save your money and go to Radio Shack.By the way I've got some ocean front property in Arizona for sale if you're interested.I'll also sell you a vintage 1960 Astron(out of my old Super) cap for $100.00.It's got a ton of Mojo(I'm serious). Unless I missed mention of it here, keep in mind that these caps don't "come into their own" -- that is, achieve their true performance values (thus, "sound") until they've had current run through them for a while. I'd compare the idea to breaking in new speakers. So keep this in mind.

Also, for the uninformed, different types and brands really do yield different results. Whether it's actually audible is another issue altogether. Many folks really do not like the green caps, and I happen to be one of them but that's just an opinion. Personally, I don't get all worked up over caps and feel it's a minor issue, but I have noticed differences.
