I have an American Standard HSS, from S/N looks like YOM is 2009, so I think it has the Alnico V SC pups. Annoying phenomena occurs when I pick (and particularly when I pick hard) while using the SC pups (N, M, or bridge + M, which taps inner HB coil) I get a very fast chirp of distortion in the signal. It decays quickly, but is annoying, and the other day at band practice when I did a clean guitar part using middle pup it was quite noticeable to my band members, and myself. I don't think it is the amp, as I have tried it on several amps I own, as well as on the Pocket Pod I use for woodshedding, and it still occurs. It doesn't happen with the bridge HB in full HB mode. It does not appear to be amp gain related, however when I roll the tone control down then it attenuates it, so it is something to do with the higher frequency content. I had a similar phenomena happen with an Epiphone Les Paul Special I had purchased years ago, it drove me nuts until I changed the pups to SD '59s, then it disappeared. Anyway, I am going to put Area 61s in and see if it eliminates it (I think it will), however - has anyone else experienced this issue? Just wondering if I have been singled out by the fates for weird pups.

Thanks.

What wre your pickup heights set to? Sounds like they may be too close to the strings. Try lowering them some to see if the chirp goes away.

Stock heights, have not adjusted them. However, they appear to be at about the Bill Lawrence rule of thumb distance value of "two nickels stacked one on top of the other"... But, its worth a shot.

BTW it occurred to me that the Epi HB problem did not occur during the pick attack but rather during the note decay, it would actually start buzzing. I did change the height and it had no effect. Again that cleared up when I changed the pups. But, this is a different case, different pups, etc. Anyway, I'll try it. Thanks.

Sight unseen, that sounds like your capacitor is discharging. Try replacing that first before you start spending hundreds of dollars on pickups.

Thanks Martian. If I understand you correctly, you mean the tone pot cap? Its an interesting idea. However, with the 250k tone pot at min it should pretty much be out of the circuit, but if I get the chance I'll remove it and see what effect that has. It may be that it is a cheap cap with a faulty dielectric, so a higher quality dielectric cap may help. Thanks for the idea!

You're welcome.

Yes, the tone pot cap.

A load is still there albeit attenuated.

Again, you're welcome.
