eBay, pawnshops, yard sales, swap meets, and music stores that sell used gear are good places to start. Also make friends with other players in the area who may have some gear they can lend you or sell to you for cheap. New pedals are usually not cheap by any means as they can be complicated little devices.

What kind of distortion do you want? A Boss DS-1 usually sells for $40 brand new, and a Digitech Bad Monkey is the same price. Both are top brands. It may not satisfy a taste for metal, but both are very useable for a wide variety of sound.

I would definitly try out eBay. That's where I get most of my pedals. There are a few Boss distortion pedals that are affordable. Otherwise Danelectro makes the Daddy O. It's not the best, but it's solid and has a lot of control. I think's it around $40. You can always check out musiciansfriend.com and browse their pedal section by price. That's what I do to research gear in a particular price range.

get a Boss DS-1. they are great distortion pedals. they are only 40 new now, and I'm sure you could find one used for less.

I guess it all depends on how strong you want your distortion to be, IMO, the old stand by BOSS DS-1 ($39.95) is a real effective way to go, although, I really like the BOSS Blues Driver, used for slight distortion. It really depends on what your playing and what sound you want to achieve. Hit your local store and play them all. Good Luck. 8)

Make me the 5th or 6th to that

Electro-Harmonix pedals sounds very nice for the price but they probably cost a bit more than u have to pay, might be worth looking for some used 1s though
