Alright, Fender has managed once again to confuse the average musician here. I have seen several models of Fender Replacement P-Bass pickups. I wanted the 62 sound, so I ordered a "62 P Bass" model. I was shipped one that just reads "Original Precision Bass Pickup Set", Not "Original 1962 P Bass Pickup" as the one I ordered. I called the seller and they said its the same pickup.

So the question is, does anyone know if in fact these are the same or what the differences would be?. Your help is appreciated.

Welcome!

It is my understanding that the "Original...Set" is in fact, one and the same.

Consider though that even back in 1962, Fender pickups were scatter wound to varying degrees so this leaves an incredible amount of audible 'room' for what is in fact, your's or anyone else's interpretation of what a true 62 sounding pickup is and should be. Of course, Fender has their own interpretation as well but there is a compounding problem to this. Namely and for example, their 57/62 Strat pickups are not modeled after a 1957 nor a 1962 Strat pickup, per se. Rather, they were reverse engineered from an original 61 Strat pickup which was clearly beefier than either a 1957 or a 1962 one which of course, would be more popular with so many of today's players at large. Why then not simply call it a 61 Strat RI? Well, calling it a 57/62 allows Fender to broadband this model where it will be 'at home' in MANY vintage type models of their Strats regardless of decade where the owners of these various and assorted Strat models will feel they too have a piece of the vintage era tone in their particular instrument(s). Is such a substitution in the name of popularity the case with your subject set too? Frankly, I would certainly think so but I honestly never did any extensive research to know for sure. Unfortunately the bottom line here in your case is, in spite of what they are marketed as, we have a classic example of, "Caveat emptor" where it is totally a 50/50 gamble on whether you're going to like this set or not. Of course and for your sake, I truly hope you do.

Well thanks for the one reply!

But since it did not seem there was anyone interested in the topic here at the Fender Forum I called Fender tech. They told me that they discontinued the 62 a year ago and that the "Original" was its replacement. However, they were also kind enough to tell me that the specs were considerably different. The bad thing is, that retailers like Music 1-2-3, Zsounds, Sam Ash and the like are advertising the 62 pickups and sending this "Original" with considerably different specs. Corporate america its finest!

You're welcome and like I said, "Caveat emptor"!

Did the Fender tech go into detail about the differences, one to the other?
