Is anyone aware if Fender consistantly put the same polarity pickup under the same pair of strings through out the years?

I have a late 70's that has a bad coil and I'm looking to replace it. I've found some sources but I have to verify the polarity to match correctly with the good 1/2 I have in the bass.

For example, if someone says the coil they have goes under the D-G strings will this coil be a 'north' pickup because Fender always put a 'north' coil under the D-G strings?

It has been my experience that US Fender (regardless of 'dynasty') has been consistent in this area. I've never received any information to the contrary either.

Thanks for the reply, Martian.

I'm having it re-wound so there won't be any problems with wrong polarity, hopefully.

How they wind it has nothing to do with the polarity.

As far as what you need to do in the end for getting in phase with the other pickup is a matter of which wire you hook up to the switch as they can be reversed.

The coil is made of a start wire and a finish end.....................either one can be positive.

You're welcome.

Whomever is doing the rewinding, should know what to do.

Thanks, sjtalon.

I'm learning more about this all the time. But, I think I'm referring to magnetic polarity not voltage. The coil is a passive device that has no polarity. Current flow will depend on direction of windings and north/south polarities of the pole pieces. Like you said, connection will be important to ensure correct phasing.

All should be good when it's all said and done.

Hey, say Yah to da UP, eh?
