I did a lot of research regarding the Texas Special's via the Telecaster. I just installed them last night. I have a few questions and comments about them. First of all, I tried searching high and low to find out if they sounded like the Strat ones. I was told they do.

I bought them specifically to get that SRV tone, without having to buy a new guitar. Well I was super excited to plug it in. But when I did I didn't notice this highly twangy bluesy sound like SRV. I mean I know I need the amp and pedals, but that raw sound wasn't coming through.

That's where my next question comes in. Did I solder it wrong for this to happen? Everything works, no buzzing, but just no SRV sound. Does that mean the two pickups are that much different from eachother?

Any help would be much appreciated, because I feel sort of let down, it was like opening a gift on Christmas and it being a lump of coal.

I was hoping for that chirpyness when I would play hammer ons, and slides...etc., for example the intro to "Lenny".

Lastly, are they the same(Strat and Telecaster Texas Special's), and all my problem is, is my amp and pedals?

I am playing through a Line 6 Spider, and also a Line 6 pod.

Thanks in advance!

Those pick-ups work the way they do in relation to the tubes.
If you want that SRV sound, there better be a setting for it on your POD.
With the gear you have, it doesn't matter what type of pick-ups you use.

Lol, now that helps me out. That's one thing I notice. When I play through a tube amp with any guitar, the sound is like...sweeter, it's warm and real, do you think that would certainly help me out? I feel like my amp can get a good clean sound but it's not...."real", obviously because it's digital, but do you think you could give me a more comprehensive "guide" I guess you could say.

I'd start w/ a bassman setting if you've got something like that on your pod or a tweed, blackface or similar setting on your and then tweek it from there.
Stevie got his tone/punch from not only his strat -p/ups but his amp really driving those tubes, and he used a tube screamer etc, but more than anything it was STEVIE, dude wrestled the crap outta his axe, so much of his tone was his playing.

It's funny that you say that because on my situation, i noticed about an hour ago, if I really punch those notes with down picking instead of up picking (in my case), I really could get those sweet chirping out of the pickups. It's like a combination of hitting it hard, and almost adding a little vibrato with my fingers. Thats when I realized man, definitely his playing.

But I still feel as if the pickups on the strat have a different sound, because I keep searching you tube with "Texas Special" and the strats have more of that tone than the telecasters. I wish they were exactly the same. But then I guess it would practically be the same guitar in a different shape.

Yea ... most of it was Stevie. But for sheer tone you should be able to get there w/ a slightly driven tube setting kinda cranked.

SRV used mostly a Vibroverb tube amp with a 15 in speaker, and 2 TS808 original Tube Screamers to get that sound. I've never seen anyone come really close to that sound with another setup. Keep in mind a Tele and a Strat are 2 different guitars no matter what pickups you have. The Texas Blues sound from one will not necessarily be the same as the other even with Texas Special pickups. SRV also used huge strings that most of us couldn't possibly play the way he did. The strings were also a part of that tone. Good luck in your quest for that sound.

Hi:

I have a Tele with Texas Specials in it, You will not get the same tone as a Texas special Strat,

Here is one of the reasons why. The lead pickup has a copper bottom plate on it, this shields the pickup and opens up slightly more mid-range, it still has the top end and bottom too.
These pickups have more windings and I believe Alinco 3 magnets and are wound with 43 guage wire like the Broadcaster and Nocaster pickups of 1950-51

The neck pickup while being overwound too, will not have the same tone as it's smaller and the cover shields some of the sound.

For me if you want the SRV tone, You need a Strat and Texas Specials, But you will have to play that Strat really hard to get some of Stevie's nuances

I think you are REALLY reaching here. The Tele and Strat Texas Specials do have some things in common, like the same alnico 5 magnets and enamel magnet wire, but the Tele pickups are wound way hotter than the Strat pups. And I would also say that as much as Stevie used his position 2 and 4 pickup selector Strat tones, unless you have a three pickup Tele, you won't even get close to those with a two pickup set-up like that, regardless of your pickups.

Look, if you view the product sale chart, you will see that even the Rober Cray has a 699 one and a 1,400 one. Even though they have the same basic electronics, there are vast diffferences..

Quality of body wood tone, diameter of wire, cavities of body are clad/painted...quality of pots and pickups are not equal. You will also see one has a mid range booster.... and wired differently.

Stevie Ray also used a Carvin (which sounded like #$*& to me),,,but his amps man...guido is right too...

Try purchasing a pre amp or bringing it to Guitar Center or any guitar shope and plugging it up in a tube....vast difference.

.not to be insulting but: It ain't the car, it's the driver............people may sound like him, but not like him. Every note was clear.
