question is ... can you put a resiter in-line with a single coil to loose some of the "icepick to the skull high end" ? the esquire uses a similar circuit to cut the high end in possition 3 on the selector. i don't want to loose volume or tie the bridge pup to the second tone control, i like the way my guitar sounds. i use the 57/62 pups and realy like them, they work with my set up. they have a resistance of 6.4k . how would this affect the bridge pup and is this or something else possible? i don't want to buy another pup.

Resister? no, a Capacitor, yes.

I changed my stock "Orange drop" cap to a old style "Paper and oil" style, like the 1950 strats had.
This removes the ice pick hight ends and adds more mids and low end. That, and you will find that the one knob actually does something other then the kill it past 3.

There are many sellers on e-bay that sell the Russian made ones, there brand new and better then the old 1950 ones.
Heres a link to the guy I got mine from, but really, all you need to is a search on e-bay and they will all come up.

Before you go messing with the wiring, have you tried playing with the pickup height?

Everyone is probably getting tired of me recommending playing with pup height, BUT, IT DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!

The Man from Vacaville is quite correct, but the paper and oil caps really do smooth out the tone.

Perhaps -- but Chet's solution costs nothing to try. And it may be "just what the doctor ordered". Before I messed with tone caps, I'd try a base plate on the bridge pickup first.

guys i want to say thanks to all of you, i want to get an oil in paper cap for my strat and adjusting the pups from the recomended higth does work but i went searching the web for some solutions and found one on a site c alled guitarnuts. i put a .0047 micro farrad cap from the mid tone control to the bridge pup tone connect. it works wonderfuly. you can leave your mid cntrol where ever you like and switch to bridge only and it just takes off the pearcing highs and you can't adjust the mid tone cont. to affect the bridge. brilliant. you even could raise the value of the cap to pull more highs away, just dont go larger than your main cap. mine is a .1micro farrad and i used the .0047 on the bridge i possibly could go to anything larger (.01,.022,.033,.047 ect.) all it would do is affect the bridge pup. again thanks for the input. now to get that onp cap.......

right on CAFeathers.

How low did you go ?

Drop those pickups down level with the pickguard.

Normally the treble side set about 1/8" higher. If it is still too shrill for you, drop the treble side and raise the bass.

Oh, and as far a caps, go to radio shack, they have 2 for a buck 49.

Save your money for good strings.

I used the "nickel method" to start then dropped them all the way down to about even with the pickguard. Amp/FX settings need to be adjusted.

As far as caps go, I use Mallory 150's. I tried some of them fancy expensive caps and for the average player like myself and probably most of the people on this forum they are a waste of money.

i have the mallory 150 in my lp (.022) they sound good. i looked up the oil in paper caps and they are are somewhat costly in comparison to regular ceramic caps but i feel to be as close to "vintage" sound as you could be it may be woth it (11.00 to 15.00 u.s.).the old ones used to dry out but the way they manufacture the new ones i don't feel it would be much of an issue. i shuold have called this caps and single coils. duh....it happens when your on meds.

The 22pf one I got cost 6.99 +1.99 to ship it too me, so it was under 10 bucks.

Now, this is far more expensive they say going o radio shack or Fry electronics and getting another ceramic one, but it is far less money then fin ding a OE from the 50's and a heck of a lot less then a new set of pick ups.

i don't go for the oe, nos stuff . i like new so i can age it. in a few years it will be "old" and "vintage". i got patience.. i'll wait. but i am getting a oil in paper cap for the strat. i'll just keep on shopping. oh yeh, after a couple of days that little mod withthe .0047 micro farrad cap on the bridge pup tone connector is working better than i could have hoped. i say do it if your bridge is too trebley.
