I recently bought a set of Fender locking tuners to upgrade my Stratocaster. After I put them on and restrung I noticed that the posts on the G, B & high E strings are considerably higher than the other 3. Did I put them on backwards? Are the taller posts meant for the wound strings? Sorry if this is a dumb question but they came with no instructions / illustrations and the last set of locking tuners I had were all level.

I only know half of the answer of your question. Many Fender tuner sets are staggered. Certain tuners go in certain places. I'm surprised this is not in your instructions. I am sure that most people on this forum will know this one. "Staggered Tuners".

Thank you pdyckman for your response. I really thought someone else would know the answer but apparently not. I was able to contact Fender tech support and got an answer. For anyone else reading this who might have the same problem here it is:
The low E, A & D strings go on the taller posts and the the G, B & high E go on the shorter posts. They did this to eliminate the need for a string tree so you can remove the tree if you wish.
You would think when you spend $70 for a set of tuners they could include a slip of paper explaining this or some kind of illustration on the package. Something for the Fender suggestion box I guess.

Does anyone have access to a template for installing locking tuners? The 2 points on the tuners are giving me fits to properly align them to the neck.

I have been thinking about doing the same thing to my Amer.strat and amazed that their are no instructions. Interestingly enough, on my strat, new in 2009, the D,G,B, & E tuner heads are shorter. Approx 6mm while the two lower strings are the tallest. (about 10mm) Now I am really confused.

I assume when you buy the tuners they came as a set. 3 tall and 3 short?

Also does the top part come off so you can insert them through the standard hole in the head?

Maybe I will just keep playing with the old strings ':D'
