I was wondering if you could tell me what pickups
you would recommend for a fuller sound
I'll explain iI recently got an SG and the humbuckers
in it our a lot fuller than my single coils in my strat
(yes I know thats the way it works ) I'm just looking
to get a better frequency response out of my strat
cause it sounds thin. I know that tone is subjective
but I respect your opinion I was thinking Fat 50s
but I don't know if the neck will be muddy for chords
what do you think (any other pickups might work?)

You rang?

I thank you for your compliment!

IMO, a prepackaged set of any identical pickups such as but not limited to the Fat 50s, etc. will only sound great in one position, adequate in another and awful in the last. I have always relied on the pickup selector switch to guide me through my tonal changes from high power and gritty all the way to medium power and clean, keeping in mind that I want the ability to compete with full sized humbuckers too.

Being the old fart that I am, I'm not afraid of 60 cycle hum and as good as certain stacks may be, I don't care whether they are Kinman, DiMarzio or whomever, they are not single coils and do not deliver all the attributes of single coil. Rather, some are suppressed or non-existent. Further, in 'my world', single coil tonality is what Strats are all about.

It appears you and I are coming from the same place tonally. Here's what I did to solve the identical problem with my Strat:

After as you may well expect me trying scores of various and assorted 'boutique' pickups, I settled in on a trio of production model Seymour Duncans, believe it or not. I put an SSL-2 in the neck, an SSL-6 in the middle and an SSL-3 in the bridge. (Note that the SSL-3 is in fact, more powerful than the SSL-6.)

The SSL-2 is by no means muddy but retains full body in a Pre-CBS vein. The SSL-6 has a nice 'rip' to it where there is none of that 'clank' so often associated with the middle pickup and the SSL-3 sounds like a great P-90 where like I've said several times, who doesn't like a great sounding P-90?

All three of these pickups have even polepieces. This makes for a greater frequency response and a balanced string response.

Hope this helps!
