I just picked up a new set of Fat 50's and I have just realized I never actually tried screwing in a new set of pickups before.

As the provided hole is undersized for the hight adjust screws, what is the best way to create the right size thread?

Is there a specific size self tapered screw you guys use, or do you use say a pickguard screw and then install the larger diameter pickup adjust screws?

I always run a tap through the hole. I can't remember the exact tap size, but I bought the small tap and die kit at HD.

When you do begin to tap the holes, thread from the bottom of the pickup so just in case something or you slips, the pickups' windings will not be in jeopardy.

They don't give screws whith your new pickups ?

Your screw and your pickups holes are american or metric ?

You are better to go to a guitar store, they have very often lots of screw in stock.
If they don't have, go to another store.

Hardware don't have those small taps for your pikups screws and if you found the right taps you could damage your holes because you have not enough metal for new hole.

Take your time, be careful.

I always use DiMarzio Pickup Screws and Springs kit. $3 plus I prefer springs to tubing (that's just my preference).

They do come with screws and tubing, however the actual screw holes on the pickup bobbins are not threaded and are much smaller in diameter than a pickup height adjust screw.

I've heard horror stories about people trying to open up the diameter of the hole just a little with a drill and woops. They then need to use a washer and nut on the pickup to be able to attach the screw.

I'm going to get down to the hardware store and see what they have to do the job. Failing that I'll go down to my local Fender guys and have them thread the holes for me, I'd rather do it myself though!

Jason Lollar prefers springs too. I'm not fused I have both, I find springs feel easier to adjust but the rubber tubing holds the pickup in place better.

I'm sure someone will say there is a tonal difference but I have never noticed!

"Ahem, the tonal difference is due to the very construction and physical properties of the spring, which adds a certain level of microphonics and harmonic overtones......."
