I'm looking for a bridge pickup thats hot enough to dial up some overdrive on the amp without mushing out yet cleans up well when the volume knob is rolled off a little without getting quiet. I'm very interested in suggestions for a pickup with these characteristics. I have custom shop Texas Specials in it now and I love the way they sound but the bridge just doesn't clean up as well as I would like without rolling the volume off so much it gets too quiet. Thanks for any suggestions.

Lower the pickup height then crank it up!

A Seymour Duncan SSL-5 would be a perfect match for your existing set and for your stated requirements.

Thanks guys. I lowered the pickup a bit and it did seem to help but Martian's suggestion has me interested. According to Duncan's website the ssl-5 is gritty but cleans up well. Of course it might be considered sacrilege to remove a Texas Special for another brand.

Off the topic but a funny and true story: I was in Nashville for summer NAMM a couple of years ago and I was in Gruhn Guitars with a friend, we were looking at an old Jazzmaster when someone walked up behind us and began commenting about the guitar and said he had twenty-five Jazzmasters himself. I was about ready to call BS on the guy till I turned around and saw it was Seymour Duncan...hehe. Guess he probably has a few guitars. Seemed like a nice guy.

Who cares about sacrilege if it gets YOU exactly what YOU are looking for with YOUR guitar? Besides, it is a completely reversible mod.

As to SD, he really is a nice guy and not full of himself like some other guitar related moguls tend to be.
