In the past, reverse taper pots were in left handed guitars. Nowadays, many manufacturers are simply throwing in right handed pots in left handed guitars..

A lefty or righty oriented pickguard can be wired into either a lefty or righty guitar. If you can post a picture of the wiring, I could tell you right away which configuration you have.

ok here's a pic ( don't mind the volume pot that has been abused by my bad soldering works )

to understand the kind of pots & wirings just watch the 2 tone pots. i've never touched them - they're stock from 2002

Image

apart the question on the left handed pots do you think i could save this pickguard replacing the volume pot and switch?

They are wired as left handed pots would be.

It appears by the coding on the pots in your picture that these are in fact, left handed pots.

Yes to your last question.

You're welcome.

Hi, i've just retired my steatocaster from Fender tech in Italy.
I'm very disappointed...
I give him a set of lace sensor pick up and a new LEFT HANDED volume pot to replace.

Once arrived at home I opened the pickguard and I noticed some probable mistakes: the crl switch was mounted in the wrong position ( spring toward the pots instead of outside), is this a problem or not ????

Last and very frustrating point... I put strings on, turned up the amp and tried the new mods.
Result : there is just a little volume coming from the guitar and the volume pot is just 10% operaive, 90% is volume 0 !!!
What could be the problem???
I bought a left handed pot..
Could be that fender put a right handed pot from factory?
I told my tech to copy the same wiring diagram by fender ( that I gave him).
That's very frustrating :(
gotta take it back to him again!!

No, it is irrelevant which side the spring is on.

He could have wired the pot wrong or simply inadequately.

There's your problem. A left handed pot has to be wired the opposite from the wiring diagram: Looking at the bottom of the pot, the left terminal is your ground and the right terminal goes to the switch. The middle still remains the same.

Indeed!

Thank you very much :)
I'm considering getting myself a good soldering machine station, take a little practice and do everything myself..
There's always some problems with this kind of "technicians".
He could test it before saying it was ok!
The funny thing is that when I said him the pot was left handed he smiled and assumed there wasn't left or right handed pots!!
I see!!!

So in a left handed pot I have to invert the cable going to the switch, opposite from the Fender diagram, in this case I must wire the right lug to the switch,
isn't it?
Why the other lug is connected on the pot itself?what's that for?

My tech cut and used a piece of the 22cap leg take. From the tone pot to wire that connection.

So I have to figure out Fender uses normal right handed pots on left handed guitars, right?

Thanx!

i just came back.

we inverted the wiring to test but nothing changed that much, instead of having the little volume from like... 8 to 10 the result was having it from 0 to 2...then all the remaining rotation was dead with no affection.

so we put back the stock pot and the result was the same....

there is quite no volume... very low....
what's the problem?
wirings are as the manual!!!

parts are ok..

pick ups are new...

At this point, we'd have to see pictures of the wiring to see what is not correct.

I'll take some asaic.
What if that left handed pot isn't a left handed one?
Could that justify this weird wolume loss?
I bought from eBay as left handed...
But this cannot be... Now the old is in place, not the new.

I don't remember Lace Sensor pickup so low volume sounding....

Amp and guitar cable are ok of course.
In fact trying my other guitar the volume is very loud.

Yes lefty pot exist and you must use that pots on a lefty guitar.

Pot on a guitar are logarytmic ( or call audio pot) not linear.

A linear pot will work righty or lefty does't mater. But logarytmic pot should be built for lefty or it should be built for righty.

Otherway it won't work

If you go to Wikipedia see logarymic and linear ?

Go to see a GOOD electronic technician. He will know what I mean.

Or try to fin on web, lefty guitar wiring.
