Hi there,
I recently got a 2005 Fender Japan strat ST57 '57 reissue, however im not sure if is the Stratocaster with the texas pickups or the USA vintage pups.
The middle pick up is reverse wound reverse polarity and the coil wires (not sure of tech term) are a dark purple/dark brownish colour.
Can you possibly shed any light on what pup's i've got?
Also, i didn't notice any blue or red dots on the bottom of the pups, but i wasn't looking for them so i could easily have missed them.

CS Texas Specials would have black and yellow cloth coated wires.

What are the resistance readings ?

the wires were black and pale yellow with the middle pickup having a "yellower" wire and they were cloth coated.
i havent been able to get readings as i dont have the tools to do so.
also the pole pieces are non bevelled

Ops sorry The middle would have the yellow and the N & B black and white.

Being they have cloth wires, they are Custom Shop.

With the yellow wire one that means RW/RP so most likely is a Texas Special, or a Fat 50's.

Custom Shop Fat '50s Bridge Pickup
DC Resistance: 6.2K

Custom Shop Fat '50s Middle Pickup RW/RP
DC Resistance: 6.3K

Custom Shop Fat '50s Neck Pickup
DC Resistance: 6.0

-----------------------------------------

Texas Special Strat Bridge Pickup: red dot
DC Resistance: 6.50K - 7.10K

Texas Special Strat Middle Pickup: RW/RP yellow pos wire
DC Resistance: 6.5K

Texas Special Strat Neck Pickup: blue dot
DC Resistance: 6.2K

thanks for the reply, i just did a google search of the fat 50's, and noticed that the fat 50s pole pieces are hand bevelled whilst mine dont seem to be at all, and i remember my pickup coil windings(the neck pickup for sure anyway), to be a much darker purple than the bright copper windings of the fat 50's.
i think im just gong to have to get some resistance readings done next time i take my guitar into see the guitar tech

Darker wire - enamel = Texas Special

50's have Formvar (bright copper)

hey all, i got my resistance readings today back.
sheet of paper says that neck pick up read 7.45ohms, middle was 6.22, and bridge was 6.05.
SO if theyre tex specs then either the tech wrote down the wrong pickup for the readings, or in japan at the manufacture point, they put the pick ups in backwards, which could be a possibility considering there arent any blue or red dots on them.
confusing. and i think im past the point of caring now :?

Regardless of the order, those readings are pretty close to Texas Specials set.

You could measure 10 different pickups and get quite a variation in readings, and none RIGHT on spes.

hey sjtalon, or anyone else for that matter,
say that the tech hadn't made a mistake when copying down the readings, are there any pickup sets with say a 7.5ohm resistance in the neck?

Not Fender, especially cloth wire, they are Custom Shop.

AFAIK

Only other thing is a pup from another mfc. as some may use cloth wire, to be "vintage". But 7.45 if pretty high for a FENDER Strat pup so other than the TS (@ apx. 7) that one on your neck is rare I would say. Like I said, readings off that far from factory are not abnormal.

I have a set of CS '69's and they advertise, 5.8 and I have one that is 5.38, and have read others that have some that read "low" as well.

I guess if anybody asks, you could say you are 99% sure they are TS's :P

i went and visited my tech today and hes sure that it was the neck pickup that had the 7.45 reading. which means that they must have been put in the wrong way round at the factory. looks like im going to have to get them switched around.

Ya the bridge and neck. The 6.22 is the middle, and has the yellow wire right ? That needs to stay there to get hum cancel with either the neck or bridge in switch pos. 2 or 4 because it is the RW/RP of the set..

One more thing. Do you have a compass.

I am just curious of the polarisation.

Stand the guitar up and put the compass up to each pickup.

When the needle points north, that is a south polarised magnet.

TS's are:

N & B: North
Middle: South

Yeah, the middle pup is the yellow wire one. I'd have hoped they would manage to wire that in correctly :?

Unfortunately i don't have a compass so i cant, but if i manage to get one ill do that.

got the readings re done and confirmed they were the wrong way round, so i got them switched and theyre all good now. too bad theyd trimmed the previous bridge pick up lead so tech had to use a hook up cable to make up the distance. thats life i guess
